Pentagon admits strike does not rule out possible future Syria chemical attacks

Syria’s capital has been rocked by loud explosions that lit up the sky with heavy smoke as U.S. President Donald Trump announce

Much like USA statements, Britain's foreign secretary Boris Johnson said there are no plans to launch additional military strikes against Syria, but that his country and its allies will consider further action if Assad uses chemical weapons against his people in the future. It was a retaliation in the wake of the suspected poison gas attack by Syrian forces on April 7, 2018, which killed more than 70 people.

However, one of the stated goals of the strikes was to deter Syrian President Bashar Assad's government from using chemical weapons again.

The bombings, hailed by US President Donald Trump as a success but denounced by Damascus and its allies as an act of aggression, marked the biggest intervention by Western countries against Mr Assad and his ally Russian Federation.

"This is something we can not accept, the use of chemical weapons on civilians", he said, "and the worldwide community needs to continue to stand extremely strongly as we continue to hold Syria accountable".

British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson told the BBC the primary goal of the attack was to "say no to the use of barbaric chemical weapons". Some critics, like Northwestern University political science professor Ian Hurd, say the decision to strike might be more about distracting from President Trump's political scandals than confronting the Assad regime.

Only three countries - Russia, China and Bolivia - voted in favour of the resolution at the end of an emergency meeting of the 15-member council called by Russia on Saturday.

Haley warned that the United States was "locked and loaded", ready to strike again if any new chemical attack was carried out in Syria.

Syrian state media quoted Assad as telling the visiting Russian politicians that allied forced behind the strikes had waged a campaign of "lies and misinformation" against Russia and Syria.

The U.S., U.K., and France launched airstrikes on the Assad regime's alleged chemical weapons facilities in Syria earlier on Saturday.

Addressing the council, US Ambassador Nikki Haley said the United States was confident that the military strikes had crippled Syria's chemical weapons programme.

"When our president draws a red line, our president enforces a red line", she added.

Britain believes "that is wholly within the principles and practices of the United Nations", she said.

"Yes, where you see the smoke", he said.

Meanwhile, the Syrian Army announced on April 14 that eastern Ghouta, the region near Damascus where Douma is situated, had been cleared of the last rebel fighters and was fully retaken. "The West suddenly remembered the suffering of people when chemical weapon was used", Yildirim said.

Russian Federation said on Saturday it would consider supplying S-300 surface to-air missile systems to Syria following the Western strikes, but this was not discussed at the meeting with Assad, agencies reported.

The Pentagon has said the strikes on Saturday successfully hit the three chemical weapons facilities which were targeted.
