International Monetary Fund revises Czech growth forecast

Subhash Garg as economic affairs secretary is the “alternate governor” for India on the IMF’s board of governors

According to the report, the recapitalisation plan for major public-sector banks announced in 2017 will help replenish capital buffers and improve the banking sector's ability to support growth.

"Self-executing and self-enforcing "smart contracts" could eliminate the need for some intermediaries", said Lagarde.

"There’s still room for countries, I think, to engage in a more multilateral set of discussions to take advantage of the set of dispute resolution mechanisms in place to avoid any intensification", he said.

A key question Bostjancic says, is whether that growth will continue. Underscoring diminished growth momentum, earnings expectations have peaked.

"US tax reform will subtract momentum starting in 2020", the International Monetary Fund said.

The IMF is usually very careful to avoid direct criticisms of its largest shareholder, the USA, couching its warnings in generic terms. The U.S. has threatened to slap tariffs on as much as $150 billion in Chinese goods, while Beijing has vowed to retaliate in kind.

In this respect the authors do add the caveat that the income from these smartphone sales "does not fully contribute to the Irish economy", as the acquisition of foreign owned IP assets, "leaves domestic employment mostly unchanged". Financial markets have been choppy this year, with USA stocks down slightly after a strong performance in 2017. Bitcoin hit nearly $20,000 (£13,958) in value in the run-up to Christmas, before crashing by more than half earlier this year.

A breakdown of the data by Bloomberg struck another upbeat note.

Many economists worry that Trump administration efforts to slap tariffs on China and other US trading partners are sparking retaliatory taxes on USA -made products that raise the cost of trading and hurt demand, stifling economic growth. Trump, who campaigned on a pledge to protect US industries from what he argues is unfair foreign competition, has slapped tariffs on steel and aluminum imports.

House attributes the rosier USA outlook to federal tax cuts, a massive $300-billion (U.S.) spending package and the possibility of an additional spending or infrastructure bill.

The IMF also said the country's economy could grow by 2.9 percent in 2019, the same expansion as forecast earlier. That's lower than the 8.9 percent forecast in October, and is also less than the raised 7.4 percent estimate for Ivory Coast and the prediction for Ethiopia, which was held at 8.5 percent.

In the April edition of its World Economic Outlook unveiled on Tuesday at the ongoing Spring meetings in Washington DC, the Bretton Wood institution said inflation rate will, however, moderate in both years.

The US economy is forecast to grow by 2.9%, up 0.6% from the previous forecast.

Trade squabbles are a key issue this week as top economic officials and experts gather from 189 nations in Washington for meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.
