San Diego woman wins Boston Marathon

Check Out the Emotion as Desiree Linden Becomes First American Woman to Win Boston Marathon in 33 Years

Former Arizona State University distance runner Desiree Linden became the first American woman since 1985 to win the Boston Marathon on Monday.

Des Linden's win at the Boston Marathon may have come as a surprise to some, but there's one person who isn't shocked: her friend and fellow Olympian Shalane Flanagan. She was also the runner up in the 2010 Chicago Marathon.

Yuki Kawauchi passed defending champion Geoffrey Kirui as they passed through Kenmore Square with a mile to go to win the men's race in 2:15:58 and earn Japan's first Boston Marathon title since 1987. In the wet and windy conditions, Sellers wore a nondescript outfit, with no visible sponsors, and crossed the finish line by simply clicking the timer on her watch.

Of course, Linden did anything but drop out, passing Kenya's Gladys Chesir just before the 22nd mile-marker to take a lead she held the remainder of the race.

The 34-year-old crossed the line in two hours, 39 minutes and 54 seconds to become the first United States woman to achieve the feat since Lisa Larsen Weidenbach in 1985.

Linden and 1985's victor Weidenback, now Lisa Larsen Rainsberger, have another connection aside from their shared titles: MI. She made her marathon debut in Boston in 2007.

"Every time I hear it, a little bit more, it sounds incredible", she said.

Linden's 2016 Olympic teammates, Shalane Flanagan and Molly Huddle, were also competing, making it potentially the strongest US women's field ever in Boston. He is not regularly viewed as an "elite" marathon runner.

A non-African born runner winning a Marathon Major until the a year ago was a really rare occurrence, especially if we excluded Russian winners (state sponsored doping program).

Pouring rain, thick sheets of fog and bitterly cold winds slowed Biwott's 2018 time by almost 6 1/2 minutes, but he finished behind only Japan's Yuki Kawauchi and Geoffrey Kirui of Kenya. But then she began dipping her toe back into road races in the fall, and found that taking a few months off gave her fresh legs.

"It might be too aggressive", she said. Perhaps Linden's experience with inclement weather in MI helped give her a leg up with the rain, wind and cold in Boston Monday.

Last year's victor Geoffrey Kirui of Kenya was placed second.in 2:18: 21 as Kenyan-born turned American Shadrack Biwott was placed third in 2:18:32.

The race was undoubtedly one that Linden will never forget.
