Gennady Golovkin to fight Vanes Martirosyan on 5 May in Los Angeles

Golovkin Takes

The fight was set to be held at the T-Mobile on Cinco de Mayo weekend and was expected to draw tens of thousands of fans from Mexico.

After pulling out of the fight against unified world champion Golovkin, Alvarez insisted he was not guilty of any wrongdoing.

Last month, it was revealed Alvarez had returned positive samples, which showed trace levels of the banned substance clenbuterol - a revelation that has led to a much-anticipated Las Vegas rematch against Golovkin on May 5 being cancelled.

Today, however, it was confirmed that the boxing star has been suspended for six months, by the Nevada State Athletic Commission.

"Vanes Martirosyan is now the most important fight of my career".

If Golovkin goes ahead with the bout against Martirosyan, the IBF said it would invoke its rule 5.H, which states, "If a champion participates in an unsanctioned contest within his prescribed weight limit, the title will be declared vacant whether the champion wins or loses the bout".

"He's been training and he's interested in fighting Triple-G. I can't wait to unleash him".

"Vanes Martirosyan brings a passionate Armenian fan base from nearby Glendale and an aggressive style of fighting", Loeffler said. "I will always be a clean fighter".

It seems unlikely that Golden Boy would be willing to have Canelo take on Golovkin on his first fight back after a long layoff.

Golovkin (37-0-1, 33 KOs) went through a bevy of options for the bout and was close to dropping his IBF title after declining the organization's mandatory challenger Sergiy Derevyanchenko, but the organization has changed its tune in light of Golovkin and promoter Tom Loeffler's announcement on Wednesday. Martirosyan's only professional blemishes have been decision losses in world title fights against Demetrius Andrade, where Martirosyan scored a knockdown, and a rematch with Lara, as well as a controversial 10-round loss to WBC super welterweight champion Jermell Charlo.
