MUELLER MAYHEM: Senate Panel APPROVES Legislation to 'Protect Mueller'

Trump said in a phone interview Thursday with “Fox & Friends” that Mueller’s probe “is a disgrace.”

The Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday approved a bipartisan bill to protect the special counsel from firing.

Bipartisan legislation by USA lawmakers to protect Mueller now lies in the hands of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell after the vote from the Republican-led Senate Judiciary Committee.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has said he will not allow the bill to be put to a vote on the Senate floor. Chris Coons, D-Del., Cory Booker, D-N.J., Graham and Tillis, and would codify Department of Justice regulations that say only a senior DOJ official can fire Mueller or another special counsel, according to The Hill.

The bill, which passed 14 to 7, would impose restrictions on the US attorney general's ability to fire a special counsel. In the meantime, the president has repeatedly and publicly harassed Mueller and questioned his probe, calling it a "witch hunt", a "total witch hunt" and illegal. One senator who opposed the bill, Sen.

The measure passed in a 14-7 vote, with the dissensions coming from GOP senators, and comes over repeated worries in the media that Trump will fire Mueller, although the president has only said, "We'll see what happens".

Experts say if it reached the Senate floor, the bill is unlikely to get the 60 votes needed to pass - and probably has even less of a chance in the House.

The legislation, introduced two weeks ago by Tillis, Graham, and Democratic Sens.

"While this outcome would, at first blush, seem to support the Mueller bill", the Atlantic reports, "a number of liberal legal scholars have endorsed the late Justice Antonin Scalia's dissent in Morrison, in which he argued the law usurps presidential power". The bill also requires an expedited court review of the special counsel's termination. The president tweeted his outrage after the raid, causing lawmakers from both parties to warn against the firing of the special counsel. Mike Lee and Orrin Hatch, that would have essentially gutted the bill and replaced it with a symbolic show of support for Mueller's work.

After the vote, the committee's top Democrat stepped up that effort.

It also would create a 10-day window within which a special counsel could petition a panel of judges to determine if the firing was for good cause.

A Quinnipiac University poll, conducted from April 20-24, found 74 percent of respondents believe Trump should not order the removal of the special counsel.
