Snapchat hopes for second time lucky with new Spectacles launch

Analysts See $-0.33 EPS for Snap Inc. (SNAP)

The new Snapchat Spectacles is now on sale in the United States, Canada, the U.K. and France, while 13 European countries will get it on May 3. And, since the Spectacles now capture video content in HD, they should deliver better-looking visuals than those produced by the first-generation Spectacles.

The upgraded smart glasses now cost $149 and boast faster transfers from the glasses to a paired smartphone, with Snap claiming syncs now take place up to four times faster.

While it may not seem like the design of Spectacles has changed with this new edition, Snap insists that it has.

While the original Spectacles were limited to recording 10-second snaps by tapping the glasses, Spectacles 2.0 can shoot photos - simply press and hold the button on top of the glasses to trigger the shutter.

That first version also caused the company to take a almost $40-million writedown in the third quarter due to excess inventory.

We hope you love the new Spectacles!

Spectacles aren't available on Amazon at this time and it's unclear whether they will be. The bigger question is if the new features will actually drive more users to hardware concept.

The glasses are slimmer and come in a variety of less gaudy colors than their predecessors: a dark blue, a deep red and an onyx black.

Snap has also added a second microphone, which the company says should help increase overall audio capture quality, particularly when it comes to capturing dialogue.

First, it created a slimmer design to fit more easily in a trousers pocket, with a noticeably smaller case for easy storage in the bag. Snap, Inc., the parent company of Snapchat, reported a $40 million write-down in November on unsold inventory.

Additionally, the new Spectacles is water-resistant up to 1 meter deep for around 30 minutes, according to Recode. Snap is also working with the online lens company Lensabl to provide prescription lenses for those of us who are not gifted in the vision department.
