Ancient Peru's child sacrifice discovery may be largest in history

World’s largest child sacrifice site believed to be uncovered in Peru

According to an exclusive report by National Geographic which was released on Thursday, the skeletal remains of more than 140 children and 200 baby llamas were found in Peru, country's northern coast.

In an email, Dr Quilter said the site provides "concrete evidence" that large scale sacrifices of children occurred in ancient Peru.

The victims appear to have been part of a ritual sacrifice that took place almost 550 years ago when the Chimú Empire ruled the area, archaeologists said.

Current research in Peru, officially called Huanchaquito-Las Llamas, conducted by an worldwide team funded by the National geographic society.

The investigations were carried out by an worldwide team led by National Geographic's Peruvian explorer Gabriel Prieto, of the National University of Trujillo, and John Verano, a physical anthropologist from Tulane University in New Orleans.

The discovery, by an global team funded by the National Geographic Society, was made on Peru's northern coast at a site called Huanchaquito-Las Llamas.

Most of the corpses of children were aged between eight and 12, although there were remains of kids who were buried at 14 years of age. It seems the children's chests were cut open and their ribs dislocated in order to remove their hearts.

In this 2011 photo, archaeological students clean the remains of children and young llamas in the fishing town of Huanchaquito, Trujillo. The llamas were less than 18 months and were buried facing the Andes mountains on the east.

The burial site has been under excavation since 2011, but a report on the findings was only released by National Geographic this week.

"I, for one, never expected it", Verano told the magazine about the magnitude of the discovery. In the next five years, they found more, and also recovered ropes and textiles dating back to the first half of the 15th century. At that time, the remains of only 42 children and 76 llamas were found.

From the footprints, it appears that the children and llamas were led in a single line and sacrificed one after the other.

Mr Quilter is part of a team which will analyse DNA from the children's remains to see if they were related and to find out where they came from. "This clearly was a different type of ritual-just children in the sand", said Verano.

"It makes you wonder how many other sites like this there may be out there in the area for future research", Prieto told National Geographic.

Evidence from a layer of dried mud in part of the site led the team to believe that the killings were made in a single event and could have been done in response to severe flooding. Robes and fabric discovered in the site were dated between 1400 and 1450.
