Jerry Jones: Witten to take 'a few more days' to mull retirement

Cowboys' Jason Witten reportedly will retire to join ESPN's 'Monday Night Football' booth

Jason Witten is thinking of relinquishing his spot on America's Team for one at the Worldwide Leader in Sports.

Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones confirmed that he has had several meeting with Witten this week.

"His expectations and his standards, you'll miss one of the guys who was one of the first ones there and one of the last ones to leave", Prescott said on NFL Network, via Brandon George of the Dallas Morning News. "He also told me that those things are going to require a few more days of consideration".

"He's not made any decisions that are definite at this time, we have no announcement today, as it pertains to Jason's future other than to say that he's a wonderful, valued member of our organization and our family".

The news on the second day of the draft could affect Dallas' plans just a week after Witten suggested he might play until he was 40 and meant to return this coming season. Witten turns 36 next month. The decision to retire is a reversal for Witten, who previously said he would return to the Cowboys for the 2018 season. Losing Witten would be a tremendous blow to this franchise and the league as a whole. Witten had 19 games in his career with at least nine catches, including an 18-catch, 167-yard effort against the New York Giants on October 28, 2012.

-The New England Patriots acquired tackle Trent Brown from the San Francisco 49ers, both teams announced. If he does retire, he career stats have been more than impressive. A person familiar with the trade said the 49ers dealt Brown and the 143rd overall draft pick to New England for the 95th overall pick.

"Since we arrived past year, Jaquiski has impressed us with his play, his work ethic and the kind of teammate he is", 49ers general manager John Lynch said. Day 2 of the NFL Draft? He has 181 tackles, nine passes defensed, 3½ sacks, two interceptions and one forced fumble in 39 games.

Selected with the 11th pick of the first round in the 2006 NFL Draft out of Vanderbilt by the Denver Broncos, Cutler played three seasons for the Broncos before being traded to the Chicago Bears, for whom he played eight seasons.
