Philadelphia Eagles, Super Bowl champions, turn to defense in 4th round

The Philadelphia Eagles got another playmaker at tight end to team with Zach Ertz, selecting Dallas Goedert from South Dakota State with their only pick in the first two days of the draft.

"The World champs! Hey Dallas, the last time you won a Super Bowl, these draft picks weren't born!" The 5-foot-9, 184-pounder is projected as a slot corner, which the Eagles now lack after losing Patrick Robinson to New Orleans in free agency. And while it might have made for a tidy story if Dallas got Dallas in Dallas, Goedert is just fine with how it worked out. If Goedert is as advertised, Eagles head coach Doug Pederson won't have any trouble finding a role for him. The Eagles will return starters Fletcher Cox and Tim Jernigan, and signed 34-year old vet Haloti Ngata.

Maddox consistently ranked as Pitt's most productive cover man over the next three years.

Common perception, however, is that Maddoc's quickness and toughness would allow him to play well in that position. "Then he said something about "get ready" and then 'we've got some business to do.' And I said I'm excited and I can't wait to get out there and play with you".

In addition to his defensive duties, Maddox returned a few kicks and punts at Pittsburgh.

"I wouldn't trade my situation for theirs", Goedert said, referring to the tight ends selected ahead of him. In dynasty leagues, Goedert is worth a third-round pick in rookie-only drafts.

Goedert's route to the draft included joining the Jackrabbits as a walk-on out of Britton-Hecla high school.

And Douglas said the 6-foot-5 pass rusher caught his eye with a quick burst off the ball. "Shouldn't take him long at all to get into the mix". He could provide some extra pressure as an edge rusher. "So he really pressures the outside shoulder of blockers". The fact that it happened in Philadelphia is better still. The Cowboys settled for offensive tackle Connor Williams.

The Eagles drafted defensive end Derek Barnett in the first round past year, but their other top pass rushers are in their 30s. They own the Lombardi trophy for 2018.

For his part, Sweat thinks he's suited to cause havoc in the Eagles' wide-nine defense.

His new quarterback, Carson Wentz, knows something about tearing it up in the Missouri Valley Football Conference.

"That's probably the reason I left [college] - I was waiting for something like this", Sweat said. That's what I do best, because I'm fast. "That's where I can showcase my talents".
