Graeme Murty sacked by Rangers, paving the way for Steven Gerrard

Alfredo Morelos of Rangers is challenged by Kristoffer Ajer of Celtic during the Scottish Cup Semi Final match between Rangers and Celtic at Hampden Park

Rangers are in talks about appointing Liverpool youth coach Steven Gerrard for next season.

"If they get Steven Gerrard in, they are going to have to back him and back him heavily and I mean a few million pounds to get that foundation and try to claw back Celtic".

Rangers' next game is at home to Kilmarnock and the club said assistants Jimmy Nicholl and Jonatan Johansson will "take charge of the team for the three remaining matches of the season".

Murty was initially installed as interim boss in October following the sacking of Pedro Caixinha, before being handed the role until the end of the campaign in December.

After losing 3-2 to ten-man Celtic at Ibrox, Murty's side were hammered 4-0 in the Scottish Cup semi-final at Hampden with Kenny Miller and Lee Wallace suspended by the club following an alleged dressing-room bust-up at full time.

Rangers appear to be closing in on the shock appointment of Steven Gerrard as Graeme Murty's tenure as manager comes to a close.

"Graeme has had to contend with hard and challenging circumstances but conducted himself in a thoroughly professional manner".

The 37-year-old would become the long-term successor at Ibrox to Graeme Murty, who was sacked earlier on Tuesday.

"Jimmy Nicholl and Jonatan Johansson will take charge of the team for the three remaining matches of the season".

Rangers are still in a battle with Aberdeen and Hibernian for second place behind Celtic.

"But he's also bright and I don't think he's going to put himself into a position where he walks into a job with his hands tied in terms of the resources he's got to compete with Brendan".

The former Fulham midfielder said that the stumbling block for Gerrard taking the job relates to questions about Rangers' resources.

"He's just been thrown to the garbage really and I think it's very, very discourteous".
