Ruling party 'will not block' protest leader as Armenian PM

In the past two days, all the parliamentary factions have either expressed support for Pashinyan's candidacy -which was announced on Monday-April 30 - as PM or have at least refused to nominate their own candidates for the prime minister's post. Armenian First Deputy Prime Minister Karen Karapetyan became acting prime minister.

"Taking into account the domestic political situation, the RPA has always said that its priority is the state interest, the fatherland's interest, the security of Armenia and Artsakh [Nagorno-Karabakh], and domestic stability". "Those professionals who are working with government structures will continue their work", he said.

Pashinian said Russian Federation has nothing to fear if he becomes prime minister and "in the near future our relations will develop and deepen, which will be in the national and government interests of Armenia".

Speaking to AFP in an interview, Pashinyan said Armenians themselves wanted to determine the future of their country and an explosion of tensions was just a matter of time.

Organizer of protests in Armenia, the head of fraction "EFC" Nikol Pashinian officially approved as a candidate for the post of Prime Minister.

Addressing demonstrators on Yerevan's Republic Square, Pashinyan said he would meet with lawmakers on Monday and called for his supporters to refrain from acts of civil disobediance.

On April, Sargsyan resigned amid anti-government protests.

Tens of thousands of opposition supporters rallied in the capital Yerevan on Sunday, hoping that a massive show of strength would propel their leader to power.

He is so far the only person to put himself forward and, as of Sunday, had received the support of all opposition parties in parliament that hold 47 seats of the 105-seat legislature where the Republicans have a majority.
