The state government urged people to donate blood and be more vigilant, reiterating its commitment to the protection of life and property. But the Police Command Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Othman Abubakar, gave a slightly different death toll.

At least 27 people have been killed and 56 injured after two blasts rocked Nigeria's Mubi town in Adamawa, officials said.

Another resident of the town, Abdullahi Labaran, said there were 73 freshly dug graves.

"We buried 76 people yesterday (Tuesday). These people died overnight from injuries, obviously".

Another grave digger, who also asked for his name not to be used, supported the account.

"I was part of the burial of 68 people and before I left the cemetary, more bodies were brought in".

Scores were injured in the attacks and were receiving treatment at various hospitals in Mubi. "The human loss is unimaginable", Muhammad Hamidu said.

Musa Bello, head of the Mubi North local government area, said Boko Haram, a militant group emerging from northeastern Nigeria, was responsible for the suicide blasts.

The UN humanitarian coordinator in Nigeria, Edward Kallon, condemned the latest attack, adding: "Civilians are consistently bearing the brunt of this conflict".

The statement expressed honest condolences to the families of the victims, stressing that the Egyptian government and people stand with the government and the friendly people of Nigeria in order to counter and eradicate terrorism.

Nigeria's Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has directed security agencies to beef up their presence in Adamawa state.

The attack bore the hallmarks of terrorist group Boko Haram which has been waging a war against the Nigerian nation since 2009.
