Rescue workers race to save 5 missing coal miners in Poland

Two of the seven miners originally trapped after the quake, which struck Zofiowka in the Silesian coal basin on Saturday morning, managed to escape within hours with only minor injuries.

Some 200 miners involved in the rescue were working in sweltering heat around a kilometre beneath the surface to find the three missing miners after one was found dead.

Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, who came to Jastrzebie Zdroj on Saturday night, has visited the hospitalized miners and met with their families. Two of the missing were later found alive and have been hospitalised.

So far this year, four miners have been killed at different coal mines, according to the State Mining Authority.

More than 200 rescue and support workers are pressing to reach five miners trapped after authorities said an natural disaster hit a coal mine in southern Poland.

Initially JSW said there was some hope the missing miners could have taken another exit but it was later revealed there was just one way out.

The rescuers still need to locate and reach four other missing miners stuck 900m underground. Unexpected emergency staff pumped air in to the impacted area to lower the level of methane fuel until they may safely proceed, Ozon explained.

The quake hit the Zofiowska coal mine at about 11 a.m. (0900GMT/UTC) in the southern town of Jasterzebie-Zdroj.
