Armenia Parliament elects opposition leader Pashinyan as PM

Armenia’s opposition leader Nikol Pashinyan

Armenia's parliament has election opposition lawmaker Nikol Pashinian because the nation's new prime minister. That vote follows a concession in which the majority party said it would put forth a candidate itself, but would vote for whichever figure was nominated by a third of the deputies. "There will be no corruption in Armenia".

"I hope that your performance as the head of government will contribute to efforts to further strengthen friendly, allied relations between our countries, partnership within the Commonwealth of Independent States, the Eurasian Economic Union and the Collective Security Treaty Organization", Putin stressed in his message of congratulations. But there is one line he won't cross for now: Armenia's special relationship with Russian Federation.

Analyst Vigen Akopyan said snap elections are certain even if Pashinyan is chosen prime minister.

Later, Pashinyan brought together his ties with the Armenian National Congress and organized his own small and rather marginalized political party "Civil Agreement" which entered Parliament in a political alliance with the "Republic Party of Armenia" lead by former PM Aram Sargsyan and "Bright Armenia" party, making up 8% in Parliament.

Nikol Pashinyan, the opposition leader who spearheaded the recent nationwide demonstrations, was the only candidate for the position, just like during the first round on May 1.

The idea of fresh elections is also supported by businessman Gagik Tsarukian's alliance and the Armenian Revolutionary Federation.

Pashinyan called for an end to the protests after the Republicans - who have 58 MPs in the 105-seat legislature - issued assurances they would back his candidacy on a second attempt.

But after leading weeks of mass protests against the ruling party, Pashinyan succeeded in dramatically transforming the political landscape in the country and was elected PM by Armenia's parliament on Tuesday.

Numerous supporters are wearing white clothes, symbolizing their hopes that Pashinian's election will bring a new page in Armenia.

Armenia's newly elected prime minister has promised sweeping changes to the thousands of protesters who rallied around his bid to unseat the country's entrenched political elite.

Pashinyan's protest movement had accused Sarkisian of a blatant power grab.

Council of Europe observers have said the referendum was marred by allegations of large-scale vote-buying and multiple voting, among other irregularities.
