Surveillance stepped up amid DRC Ebola outbreak

Mass vaccination not enough to prevent Ebola outbreak

The WHO was especially concerned about the possible spread to neighboring Republic of Congo and the Central African Republic, which has connections to the affected area through the river systems. "Due to its huge swathes of forest, the DRC is a reservoir for the virus, making the country particularly susceptible to outbreaks of Ebola", he says.

Congo's vast, remote geography also gives it an advantage, as outbreaks are often localised and relatively easy to isolate.

The World Health Organization is preparing for the "worst case scenario" as it continues to respond to the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The deadliest Ebola outbreak, which was in 2014 and centered around Libera, Guinea and Sierra Leone, killed more than 10,000 people and lasted for months.

As of Wednesday, 32 people are suspected to have been infected with Ebola viral disease, including three health care workers.

But according to BBC Africa, the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has announced that it is taking swift action to make sure Ebola does not enter the country. Five samples were collected from 5 patients and two have been confirmed by the laboratory.

Ebola viruses probably spread in bats most of the time, but they do occasionally "jump" to other species such as deer, monkeys or humans.

"We are aware of the outbreak of Ebola in DRC following an announcement by the country on May 8, 2018".

17 people are reported to have died from the latest outbreak in the town since December past year, according to the country's health ministry. Key partners, skilled in working in Ebola outbreak settings, have been mobilized, such as Doctors Without Borders, the WFP, UNICEF-which helps with communication and sanitation activities-and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, which helps perform safe burials.

So far, no case of Ebola has been reported in Angola.

Her Tourism counterpart, Najib Balala said the government has maintained constant communication with DRC officials, who assured that the situation is under control.

WHO has provided technical and operations support to the Ministry of Health and Partners in the activation of multi-partner multi-agency Emergency Operations Centre to coordinate the response at all levels. All of the deaths occurred before the outbreak was confirmed.

Nigeria was declared free of Ebola in October 2014 by the World Heath Organization, after 42 days had passed since tests showed the last infected person no longer had the disease.

The fist case of the virus was discovered near the Ebola River in the Democratic Republic of Congo, almost 40 years ago.
