Hamilton and Vettel query F1 2019 decision-making process

Lewis Hamilton Sebastian Vettel F1 news

Sebastian Vettel, who trails Hamilton by four points in the drivers' standings, kept Ferrari close in the morning session, but Red Bull was the main challenger to Mercedes in the afternoon. Even if the start doesn't go in our favour, I think we always have a strong vehicle to keep fighting. I think the last run in Q3 was fine, there were no mistakes, so there was not much left.

"All the drivers feedback was "thank you very much, that's what we like", it's more challenging, you see us more exhausted after the race and now you make them slower again!".

It was a very close qualifying and you could see all weekend that Ferrari were clearly sand-bagging because they knew they had a quick vehicle, but it took everything from us to get this result and to get the 1-2 in qualifying is fantastic for the team. It's a bit like cruising to America and changing direction 100 times.

In this picture, Pole position victor Ferrari's German driver Sebastian Vettel (R) celebrates with second placed Mercedes' British driver Lewis Hamilton after the qualifying session for the Formula One Azerbaijan Grand Prix at the Baku City Circuit in Baku on April 28, 2018.

Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel launched a scathing attack on the Formula 1 hierarchy after hearing that the rule changes for next year will make the cars slower by nearly 1.5 seconds compared to 2018.

"We want to push the boundaries and the limits", said the Mercedes driver.

"It's incredible the technology we have and what we're doing with it. We'll try to make a good start and see how the race pans out".

Hamilton and Vettel were unhappy with the proposed changes and suggested the drivers should be consulted to find out what changes can aid overtaking.

"Obviously, I am not entirely happy, but we expected Mercedes to be very strong here", said Vettel.

Not to say that we know everything, we don't anything about engineering the auto, but we know how the cars feel, how to drive the cars. "We really tried to continue to understand and be open-minded, it is easy for us to get stuck in our ways, and we definitely let loose and be open-minded to try to improve which is great".

Max Verstappen won the intra-team battle at Red Bull, finishing ahead of Daniel Ricciardo by just 0.003s.

Magnussen said he was not even aware of the changes being made for 2019 before this weekend.

"Is it the same people making the decisions every time, the same group, making the decision every time the rules go. not necessarily the best?" said Hamilton. "It feels like something that could prove to not have the effect you were hoping for".

His 74th career pole is also a return to competitive form just when he needed it, having been outpaced over the single lap at Bahrain and China by his team-mate Bottas, and by Vettel in the last three races. The changes include a simplified front wing and brake ducts and a bigger rear wing flap to make DRS more powerful - all of which will make the auto less aerodynamically efficient and slower compared to its 2018 counterpart.

"For me it's not about setting records everywhere", he added.

"Yes it's the same for everybody but sometimes it works for one better than others".
