Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Massive Egg Recall Worsens With 12 More Sickened

Salmonella Braenderup Outbreak Rose Acre Farms Eggs 5918

Thirty-five people have been sickened by a salmonella outbreak linked to the recall of almost 207 million eggs, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said in an update this week.

Thirty-five people - up by 12 over the past few weeks - have been sickened by Salmonella braenderup, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said this week. Most of the cases, including 11 people hospitalized, were reported in NY and Virginia.

Nine states have confirmed salmonella cases: Colorado, Florida, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina and SC. Illnesses have been reported in all of the states, the majority of which were from NY and Virginia, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said.

An investigation by federal officials led to an inspection of the farm's facility in Hyde County, North Carolina, which produces 2.3 million eggs a day from 3 million hens. They were distributed from a farm in Hyde County, N.C., and sold by retailers under different brand names: Coburn Farms, Country Daybreak, Crystal Farms, Food Lion, Glenview, Great Value, Nelms, Publix, Sunshine Farms and Sunups.

Egg cartons with the following numbers were impacted: P-1065 (the plant number) and numbers between 011 and 102.

The agency gave the last update on April 16, when it reported 23 people were ill.

Salmonella is a bacteria that can be found on the inside of contaminated eggs and on eggshells, too.

According to the Post, Rose Acre Farms has come under scrutiny in the past for salmonella contamination.

Symptoms include fever, nausea, diarrhea and abdominal pain. The outbreak spread to almost 40 states and sickened 132 people.

The company pulled 206 million eggs from shelves in April, but the CDC says some might still be developing infections. It is being urged that if you or anyone you know present these symptoms after ingested recalled eggs to contact your doctor and get treatment immediately.

Rose Acre Farms' recall is the largest involving eggs since 2010.

There is aditional information on the recall on the FDA website and the CDC website.
