Two British hostages in Congo released

Kidnapping Two British citizens have been kidnapped while visiting the Virunga National Park in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo

On April 9, five rangers and a driver were killed in an ambush in the park.

The vacationers and their driver have been kidnapped in Virunga Nationwide Park in Congo.

A Foreign Office spokeswoman told AFP that the two Britons were released unharmed and the ministry would continue to provide support to the Britons and their families.

Rebel groups and militias control large swathes of the country's east and more than 175 rangers have died protecting Virunga National Park, which is adjacent to neighboring Rwanda and Uganda, since it was founded in 1925.

"I am delighted to announce that two British nationals who were held hostage in the Democratic Republic of Congo have been released", Britain's foreign minister, Boris Johnson, said in a statement.

They were kidnapped on Friday while visiting the Virunga National Park.

The UK's top diplomat Boris Johnson declined to offer any further details, but paid tribute to the Congolese authorities "for their tireless help during this awful case".

He said: "We wish to extend our sincerest condolences to her family, and our thoughts are with all those affected by this incident".

Cosma Wilungula, director general of the Congolese Institute for Nature Conservation, said: "We would like to thank our fearless team for ensuring the swift resolution of this incident, and the safe return of the two British nationals". The kidnapping took place near the village of Kibati, north of Goma, in North Kivu.

A park ranger who tried to protect them was shot dead by the attackers.

The Foreign Office now - and before the kidnapping - advises against travelling to the area.

Baraka was critically injured when the vehicle the four were travelling in was attacked by armed assailants, the park said on its website.

It said that United Kingdom government staff were not always in the area and the British embassy's ability to offer consular assistance could be "severely limited".
