Google to be investigated in Australia over data claims

Google to roll out ''Take a Break'' feature for YouTubers

However, as per a statement from Google, the practice of collecting data from Androids is not only common but easily able to be opted-out-of by mobile users.

The ACCC together with the Australian Privacy Commissioner are now reviewing the revealed information.

"We are exploring how much consumers know about the use of location data and are working closely with the privacy commissioner", Rod Sims, chairman of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, told the Guardian.

According to Oracle, the data from locations is then being fed to advertisers to help serve more targeted advertising. "The types and quantity of such data that a user's device transmits would depend on the products or services they use.in some cases a user's settings", it added. This reportedly contains location info, even the place location providers are turned off, with no apps put in, and the place no SIM card is inserted.

As per the report, Oracle experts have said that consumer data gets used even if Google Maps is not in use or Aeroplane mode is switched on. Noted security researcher and the former chief technologist for the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), Ashkan Soltani, had then opined through a tweet that Oracle may be the hidden source of the allegation: "After 5+ mo of lobbying @oracle managed to finally sell this important @google @android privacy story to the press".

The apps, once installed, take measures to stay on the device, disappear and wipe their tracks, including waiting for hours before launching malicious activity to avoid arousing suspicion and requesting admin privileges - using the Google Play icon when doing so to feign legitimacy.

A gig of data now costs about $3.60-$4.50 a month.

Although Google insists that data tracking is lawful when done with the permission of mobile users, data privacy advocates are uncertain if it's being made clear enough to Android users that it includes their mobile devices as well - leaving open the question of how valid that consent is. Currently, there are 10 million users in Australia using androids.

Oracle is of course in the middle of an ongoing lawsuit against Google in the United States with regards to Google supposedly using protected Java APIs in Android.

According to Oracle, Google is accessing information such as barometric pressure readings and coordinates, which could be used to work out whether someone is located outside or in a shopping centre.
