IL student shot after pulling gun on school officer

'Things could have gone much worse': Former student is shot by officer during gunfire exchange at Dixon High School

The Dixon High School resource officer who stopped an armed former student from shooting anyone inside the building is being hailed a hero for his efforts. Sauk Valley Media reported that the suspect was a 19-year-old former student, but this has not been confirmed by police, city, or school officials.

There is a debate over school resource officers/armed guards at schools. The gunman opened fire at the officer, who returned fire and wounded the suspect.

President Trump slammed Scot Peterson as a coward for failing to confront shooting suspect Nikolas Cruz at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland.

Authorities haven't provided the gunman's name. "With shots ringing out through the hallways of the school, he charged towards the suspect and confronted him head on", Howell said.

The incident occurred in the gym, where seniors were gathered for graduation practice, City Administrator Danny Langloss said. Howell says the officer is being placed on paid administrative leave at this time. It is unclear whether the incident took place inside the school or outside the building.

The release reiterates the city manager's statement saying there were no injuries to students after the shooting. Parents must show ID to pick up their kids. His injuries are not considered to be life-threatening.

WQAD 8 reports that no one else was injured during the armed confrontation.

Dixon police believe the suspect acted alone and say there is no further threat to the safety of students and staff.

Langross summarized the morning, saying, "We're lucky the officer was there".

The School unification point will be at the baseball fields in Page Park.
