Michigan State University Pays $500M To Larry Nassar's Victims

Larry Nassar Survivors and Michigan State University announce they have successfully resolved existing litigation and agreed in principle to a $500 million global settlement

The deal surpasses the $100 million-plus paid by Penn State University to settle claims by at least 35 people who accused assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky of sexual abuse, though the Nassar deal involves far more victims.

Before the agreement is final, the claimants must approve the agreement and a judge must sign off on it, according to a lawyer representing several dozen young women.

Nassar graduated from the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1993 before he became a physician at the school.

Larry Nassar's victims will receive the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at this year's ESPYS.

More than 250 women and girls gave statements in court when Nassar was sentenced in January and February. The suits alleged that MSU, USA Gymnastics and others failed to protect the victims from sexual abuse by Nassar. His dismissal came less than a month after former gymnast Rachael Denhollander filed a criminal complaint saying Nassar had sexually assaulted her while treating her for back pain years earlier.

Dr. Larry Nassar appears in court for a plea hearing in Lansing Mich. Michigan State University has reached a $500 million settlement with hundreds of women and girls who say they were sexually assaulted by Nassa

The institution said no confidentiality agreements or no-disclosure agreements would be attached to the settlement, which it described as agreed to "in principle". A successful resolution to the litigation is a positive step in moving us all forward. The organization previously said it was unaware of the abuse until 2015. "But this is a step in the right direction".

Nassar is now being held in federal jail and will likely remain there for the rest of his life.

Nassar, 54, who is serving a federal prison sentence of 40 to 175 years in MI, had worked for decades with MSU students as well as U.S. Olympic gymnasts who alleged he abused them, including gold medalists Jordyn Wieber, Aly Raisman, Gabby Douglas and McKayla Maroney. He received two additional sentences amounting to decades behind bars, after admitting to molesting young gymnasts.

Sen. Curtis Hertel, D-East Lansing, said part of the package - eliminating governmental immunity for those who commit sexual assault and in some instances, government bodies that harbored them - is needed outside of the Nassar case.

White says that Nassar's MSU's employment contract said he was paid to do "community outreach". Amid the fallout, the university president resigned, the state attorney general opened a criminal investigation, and Nassar's longtime boss, William D. Strampel, was charged with committing abuse himself. However, the settlement covers only the victims connected to Michigan State. Yet even as school officials allowed him to return to treating patients, the school's Title IX coordinator called his methods a "liability" that exposed patients to unnecessary trauma.
