United Kingdom still negotiating with European Union over Brexit backstop , says May's spokeswoman

Brexit news BBC Newsnight Theresa May Northern Ireland

A detailed Brexit strategy dossier will be produced in the coming weeks, the British government said Wednesday, amid accusations that cabinet divisions are holding up negotiations with the EU.

Settling the future status of the Irish border is at the heart of the European Union negotiations.

However, Theresa May has already said that she wants to avoid free movement and wants to "seek a new customs arrangement with the EU" which "may contain elements of the single market".

The tariffs govern the duties levied on goods arriving in the customs union, the EU's trading bloc, which Britain is now a member of.

It is understood Downing Street is considering taking that language literally.

"The other one is does it affect Northern Ireland in an adverse way and can we mitigate the impact of that?"

The Prime Minister earlier denied "climbing down" on leaving the customs union, amid speculation the departure could be delayed for years until a replacement system is established. And even though there may be no customs checks, there will have to be checks on goods crossing the Border. Leaving with no deal in place would mean leaving the single market and trading with the European Union based on WTO rules.

Britain has vowed to leave the EU's single market and customs union after Brexit, which legally takes place on March 29, 2019, but in effect will be delayed by a transition period lasting until December 31, 2021.

In particular these rules govern the regulation of agrifood products, animal health, food and plant safety.

In the Kingdom believe that between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland should not be hard border after the British exit from the EU.

Customs arrangements remain the biggest obstacle to agreeing the UK's Brexit terms by an October deadline, with the Cabinet still divided over the government's two proposed models, neither of which are acceptable to Brussels in their current form.

The virtue of the so-called third way is that it would make the "backstop" less toxic for Theresa May and the DUP.

Following the meetings, the Prime Minister confirmed that the UK's alternative "backstop" proposal would be produced "in due course".

The former head of Unilever, Niall FitzGerald is of the opinion that Ireland is perfectly positioned to become a global center for research and academia in the post-Brexit world, according to a report published by The Irish Times.

It is, however, likely to face stiff opposition from hardline Brexiteers who want a complete break from European Union customs arrangements.

The EU and Dublin insist the treaty must lock in a backstop arrangement in case future customs arrangements do not remove the need for controls on the intra-Irish border.
