Time lapse from Hawaii observatory shows eruptions at Kilauea

Lava at Pacific ocean

It knocked him backward on the third-floor porch of his neighbour's home on the eastern end of the Big Island, where most people had evacuated amid three weeks of heightened volcanic activity on Kilauea.

On Wednesday, Hawaii Governor David Ige said that while officials are continuing to monitor gases leaking from the power plant, "all wells are stable at this point". That lava is now traveling underground. within the East Rift Zone in Leilani Estates. The plant harnesses heat and steam from the earth's core to spin turbines to generate power.

Earlier this month officials removed a flammable gas called pentane from the plant to reduce the chance of explosions.

Around 40 homes and structures have been destroyed by lava flow in Puna.

There have been two new small explosive eruptions at the summit of Kilauea volcano on Hawaii's Big Island.

Earlier on Tuesday morning, an ash cloud rose to 8,000 feet and drifted southwest from the volcano, according to USGS.

Experts say - this pattern is similar to the eruptions in 1955 and 1960, which happened in the same general area of lower Puna.

The sheer force of the lava bomb was what Darryl Clinton remembered feeling first, more powerful than any waves he had ever encountered in the ocean surrounding Hawaii.

That prompted safety warnings about toxic gas on the Big Island's southern coastline.

Clinton was hit by a flaming ball of literal lava from Hawaii's Kilauea (of Golfers Not Caring fame) Saturday and lived to tell the tale to Anderson Cooper - in surprisingly pedestrian fashion.

For five days, they had taken turns hosing down homes whenever molten rocks - flung from Fissure 17 - landed on them. Later that night, the lava entered the ocean, producing spectacular - and deadly - plumes, and officials advised all people to avoid the area because of a new hazard: laze.

The latest explosive eruption yesterday at 9.59pm local time sent plumes of smoke nearly 9,000 feet into the air.

Stovall said lava spatter from one of the vents was forming a wall that was helping protect a nearby geothermal plant.
