Memorial Day events honor vets

Memorial Day services announced for the area

The Veterans for Peace chapter is also placing more than 6,000 grave markers in Olbrich Park along Atwood Avenue on Saturday to recognize service members killed in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.

Waynesfield - 9 a.m. parade at the American Legion, 104 W. Wapakoneta St., traveling west to the cemetery. Participants are asked to bring long-shank screwdriver to aid in making starter holes for flags. Note change in parade route due to construction on Southview Boulevard.

Here are the events that will honor them. The event includes free hot dogs, groceries, haircuts, clothing, kids activities, raffles and drawings. Military personnel will stand at attention in one-hour shifts throughout 24-hour period.

Victor Valley Memorial Park will host its annual Memorial Day Service. Featured speaker is Chief Master Sgt. Troy Abel, superintendent, Mission Support Group, 190th Air Refueling Wing.

The American Legion Post 109, located at 624 Ash St., will offer free breakfast to all veterans and $5 per plate for non-veterans from 7 to 9 a.m. prior to the ceremony.

Veterans and the public are invited to attend.

In Blackfoot on Monday, the American Legion and local businesses will hold a memorial service and wreath laying at Grove City Cemetery on Hwy.

OELWEIN - The 152nd Memorial Day services will be conducted by the Oelwein Ross Reid American Legion Post 9 on Monday, May 28. The parade features the Kalida and Ottawa-Glandorf High School marching bands.

11 a.m. - Memorial Day ceremony in Toledo at the Veterans Memorial by the Life Center. Sponsor: Centerville Civic Association. Liam Lawless, a sophomore at Nauset Regional High School, will play taps, Kristin Howard will sing patriotic songs, Sarah Marchio will play bagpipes and Scott "Abraham Lincoln" Hamilton will read his Gettysburg Address. The parade begins at the Lewiston Red Brick Schoolhouse and ends at the Veteran's Memorial in Academy Park.

Special guest speaker will be Jeremy Jersvig, a U.S. Navy veteran and Loveland City Council Ward I councilor. If inclement weather, program held at 1867 West Dennis Graded School, School Street. Main Street Bridge memorial service for those lost at sea begins at 10:15 a.m. No charge for veterans. The Metro Customer Service Center will be open from 8 a.m.to 4:30 p.m.at 266-4466. Lilly Morgan will recite the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by an invocation given by Donald Cunningham.

David Shuey, actor and historian of History Teller Productions, will deliver the Memorial Day message.

Hyannis: John F. Kennedy Memorial Trust Fund Committee's annual Memorial Day ceremony, 12:15 p.m., John F. Kennedy Memorial on Ocean Street (next to Veterans Park Beach).

Wilkin said the firing of a rifle salute is a symbolic difference between Memorial Day and Veterans Day. Then, a new flag will be raised. The Sons of the American Revolution and the Clarke County Honor Guard will also perform at the service. Afterward, the Methodist Church will open Freedom Hall for refreshments, and the Orleans Fire Department will provide hot dogs. After the ceremony, there will be a procession to the Canfield East Cemetery, where a second brief ceremony will honor deceased Canfield veterans. A wreath will be placed at the memorial. Ceremonies will follow in front of Sandwich Public Library, 142 Main St.

A barbecue will be hosted at the American Legion across from Wheeler Park on May 26 and 27. An honor guard will fire a salute.

"Memorial Day is where we remember all those that have fought and served our country and gave their lives during active service", VFW Chaplain Capt. Reese Lopez said, "as well as those that passed away after and served our country".
