Mixed reactions in Singapore to Trump-Kim summit cancellation

Stocks slide as Trump says North Korean meeting is canceled

In a personal letter to Kim, Trump announced Thursday he would not go ahead with the June 12 summit in Singapore, following what the White House called a "trail of broken promises" by the North. He wrote: "Very good news to receive warm and productive statement from North Korea".

He added: "This missed opportunity is a truly sad moment in history".

-South Korean military drills and Washington's call for unilateral denuclearization of the peninsula. "I would hope that there would not be a return to talk about military options", she says.

Kim said the United States is at fault for what Trump described as North Korea's "hostility", saying that Pyongyang was responding to "excessive" USA comments pressuring the country to "unilaterally discard" its nuclear weapons ahead of the summit.

North Korean Vice Foreign Minister Kim Kye Gwan said in a statement released by the North's central news agency (KCNA) that his country remains open to resolving problems with the United States "whenever and however", and offered praise for President Trump's diplomatic engagement efforts. American diplomats who'd travelled to Singapore to pave the way for the summit were stood up by North Korean officials, the White House said.

Analysts have decried the pace of events over the last few months, pointing out that the diplomatically untested businessman-president appeared to have little understanding of the complexities of dealing with North Korea.

When Chien Cheng wrote: "Better for United States to pull the plug to see how honest North Korea is".

Arguably, trying to interpret the USA president's moves in diplomatic terms is a mistake.

"But as the meeting between heads of DPRK and U.S. is the first step in solving problems through dialogue, we have done our honest efforts with the expectation that it will be a meaningful starting point for the peace and security of the region".

"We are in a boxer stance, we are ready to respond", Lieutenant General Kenneth McKenzie, director of the United States military's Joint Staff, told reporters.

"I never expected things to go smoothly so I can't say that I'm the least bit surprised", he told the BBC, adding that there was a lot of disappointment from South Koreans. The message came after a key aide to Kim hit out at comments from Vice President Mike Pence, saying they were "ignorant and stupid" and warning the talks could be cancelled.

However, Trump's decision hasn't come as a complete shock for those who have been following-up the constant back-and-forth from both sides in the run-up to the June meeting.

"I know the president is (optimistic) as well", he said.

"Please do not hesitate to call or write", Trump wrote in the conclusion of his letter. The smattering of journalists from the USA, U.K., South Korea, China and Russian Federation took a reported 20-hour journey by train and bus from Wonsan, on North Korea's east coast, to get to Punggye-ri for the nuclear site dismantlement. Trump has seemed to welcome chatter of a Nobel Peace Prize, but that had yielded in recent weeks to the sobering prospect of ensuring a successful outcome with the Kim. Since January, Kim has taken a radically softer approach to foreign affairs, sending his sister to the Olympics in South Korea, meeting with his South Korean counterpart on their shared border and exploding parts of his nuclear testing site Thursday in an apparent sign of good faith.

"I don't think North Korea is going to respond so well to that kind of a threat". The US balked at that demand.

"We see the position of both countries remaining unchanged in that they seek to resolve any issue through dialogue", Unification Ministry spokesman Baik Tae-hyun told a regular news briefing.

Moon will not be able to act on numerous agreements he made with Kim at their summit unless meaningful progress is made on the nuclear issue, which requires cooperation by the United States, said Cheon Seong-whun, a former secretary to the president for security strategy.

A spokesperson for Moon's office said on Thursday that South Korea was trying to understand the reason for Trump's abrupt cancellation.

Moon convened an emergency meeting with top security officials after Trump's cancellation. "The South Korea-US alliance will be shaky".

Hazel Smith, a professor at the University of London, said comments by Trump administration officials such as National Security Adviser John Bolton and Pence in recent days about a "Libya model" for North Korea likely made Pyongyang nervous.
