Pakistan fined for slow over-rate during Lords Test

Pakistan dominate Day One

But this was a moment of unalloyed joy to set alongside Amir's role in Pakistan's Test win over England at Lord's two years ago - a victory that helped them to a 2-2 draw in a four-match series. "He's got a great character and he really showed that", added Buttler, who started his career at Somerset before moving to Lancashire. "We've been outplayed across all three departments and in particular, we were disappointing with the bat first up and well below-par", he said.

"Pakistan's bowlers exploited the conditions well but we played some poor shots and you can't afford to do that".

Having been bowled out for 184 in their first innings, Joe Root's side fared only marginally better in their second attempt, England slumping from 235-6 overnight to 242 all out after just 27 minutes and 25 deliveries of the morning session on Sunday.

Malan edged a good-length Amir delivery, with diving wicket-keeper Sarfraz Ahmed, the Pakistan captain, holding an excellent low one-handed catch that would not have carried to first slip.

There is little time for an inquest into England's humiliation - and make no mistake, regardless of Pakistan's excellence, their opponents have been largely woeful - given that the second Test at Headingley gets underway on Friday.

"We wanted to scrap hard and try and get ourselves back in the game", Buttler said.

"He's told us to pitch it up to take wickets in England", explained Sarfraz.

Mahmood, who is now Pakistan's Bowling Coach, retired from global cricket in 2007, having played 21 Test matches and 143 One-Day Internationals for his country in a career spanning eleven years.

Alastair Cook, who top-scored with 70 in the first innings, was trapped lbw by Mohammad Abbas for one and Mark Stoneman, under severe pressure for his place in the team, made a scratchy nine before he was bowled by leg-spinner Shadab Khan before England limped to lunch at 37 for two.

Buttler, who closed on 66 not out, shared an unbroken partnership of 125 with debutant Dom Bess.

It was the latest memorable Lord's incident for Amir, who took six wickets in a Test innings at MCC's headquarters in 2010 - the same match where his involvement in a spot-fixing scandal led to a jail sentence and a five-year ban from cricket.

Abbas followed the example of Amir to dismiss Stuart Broad for a duck in similar fashion, Sarfraz gathering another edge after an unconvincing prod.

Pakistan pacemen Mohammad Abbas and Hasan Ali took four wickets apiece as England suffered yet another top-order collapse at Lord's on Thursday.

The innings ended when Amir knocked over Bess's off-stump as the batsman went to drive.
