Lava in Hawaii covers 2 wells of geothermal plant

Infrared images reveal damage on Hawaii's Big Island

Tourism officials say Hawaii's Big Island has lost about $3 million for May, June and July as major cruise lines have canceled planned stops because of an erupting volcano.

Around 37 structures are already "lava locked", meaning homes are inaccessible, and people who do not evacuate may be trapped by lava flows.

The U.S. Geological Survey's Hawaii Volcano Observatory described the eruption from the East Rift Zone as "vigorous".

A fast-moving pahoehoe flow from fissure 8 is advancing on several streets in the Leilani Estates subdivision, according to officials.

Though lava destruction from the volcano is confined to a roughly 10-square-mile (26-sq-km) area, the eruption is hurting the island's tourist-driven economy as potential visitors fear ashfall or volcanic smog belching from Kilauea's summit.

Residents remain concerned that lava from the erupting volcano could trigger release of toxic gas from the power plant's wells; Jeff Paul reports from Pahoa, Hawaii.

The sole reported serious injury from the eruption so far came when a man was hit by flying lava. Officials have said the power plant is safe but lava has never engulfed a geothermal plant anywhere in the world, leaving a measure of uncertainty.

Meanwhile, about 60,000 gallons of pentane, a highly-flammable chemical, were moved from the PGV site early this month.

Lava-filled fissures have opened up across the southeastern side of the Big Island over the past three weeks as the Kilaeau volcano has become more active.

In just the past 24 hours, there were between 250 and 270 earthquakes at Kilauea's summit, with four explosions on Saturday sending ash to altitudes as high as 4,570m, said National Weather Service meteorologist John Bravender.
