`Solo' Tops `Deadpool 2' at Weekend Box Office

Most Fans Forgot Boba Fett Would Be Star Wars’ First Lead of Color & That’s a Problem

Disney and Lucasfilms's "Solo: A Star Wars Story" topped North American weekend box office with an estimated 83.3 million USA dollars three-day debut, coming in well behind industry expectations.

"Solo: A Star Wars Story" opened to an estimated $103 million in the US and Canada over the long Memorial Day weekend, substantially less than any other movie in the franchise since Walt Disney Co. relaunched it in 2015.

The number, while being the biggest Memorial Day weekend debut in the last four years, came in well under industry expectations.

For years, decades even, the idea of a solo Han Solo movie Star Wars fans.

In theaters now, director Ron Howard's Solo: A Star Wars Story stars Alden Ehrenreich as Han Solo, Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian, Emilia Clarke as Qi'ra, and Joonas Suotamo as Chewbacca.

The Star Wars Universe is officially back on track with Solo: A Star Wars Story as the new standalone film answered several questions about some of the most important characters from the original and prequel series.

20th Century Fox's superhero film "Deadpool 2" came in second with an estimated 42.7 million dollars in it second weekend, pushing its North American cume to 207.4 million dollars through Sunday. In five weeks, its domestic tally has topped $626 million, while globally it has made $1.9 billion. And, given the woeful opening of "Solo: A Star Wars Story", Han might have a bad feeling about a few other less-than-stellar numbers, too. But is it possible that Solo also hinted at what could happen in the next Star Wars spin-off movie? While reviews were generally positive (71 percent "fresh" on Rotten Tomatoes), there was little about "Solo" that made the movie a must-see event. Plus, Solo's baggage heading into theaters may have dampened the appeal of a new Star Wars film.

Fans were skeptical of Ehrenreich and uncertain about the dismissal of Lord and Miller (the popular filmmaking duo behind "21 Jump Street" and "The Lego Movie"). The second film in "Star Wars'" sequel trilogy debuted with $220 million domestically.

In China, Disney's earlier installment The Last Jedi, was also beaten out by a local romantic comedy, Huayi Brothers Media Corp's The Ex-File 3: Return of the Exes.

Lucasfilm has at least nine more Star Wars films in the works. "It is summer, after all", said Dergarabedian.

We're experiencing "Star Wars" saturation.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at US and Canadian theaters, according to comScore.
