IOS 11.4 brings a long awaited messaging feature

White Home Pod speaker on a black shelf

It's built for video and audio but it's the audio side that everyone's interested in as it means you can pair two Apple Homepod speakers, arguably a feature that really should have been available day one of the Homepod's release.

Apple's developer showcase WWDC 2018 is coming up fast (it kicks off June 4), and should bring news of new developments for Siri, augmented reality and Apple's burgeoning arsenal of OSes (iOS 12, watchOS 5, tvOS 12 are among our favourite typographical challenges).

Here's a complete tutorial on how you can enable Messages in iCloud in iOS 11 / iOS 11.4 and how you can use it too.

Today sees the release of iOS 11.4 and with it Apple is adding AirPlay 2. Just launch the Settings app, tap on General and scroll down to Software Update. As with any iOS update, we recommend backing up your iPhone first. Here's a rundown of the features. While it has been possible to sync your messages across devices before, the new change gives iPhones, Macs and iPads a single encrypted archive. AirPlay 2 devices will now show up in the Apple Home app, since AirPlay 2 integrates with HomeKit.

AirPlay 2 lets users control their home audio system and AirPlay 2 compatible speakers by syncing them and playing music at the same time. You'll also be able to take a call on your iPhone without stopping playback.

And AirPlay 2 enables multi-room playback, letting you pump music and audio to speakers in various spots in your flat and have them be synced up. Apple's own HomePods will be automatically supported so there will be no need to manually group speakers.

Specifically for HomePod users, the iOS 11.4 update brings support for setting up HomePod stereo pair using your iPhone or iPad. The new update will allow users to store their messages, photos and other attachments on iCloud and free up space on their devices. Deleting a message on one device would remove it from all your devices.

We're about a week away from seeing what iOS 12 will be like, but in the meantime the latest version of iOS 11 is now available to download. iOS 11.4 is here, bringing two overdue features promised past year: AirPlay 2 and iMessages in iCloud.
