Coach quits Real Madrid after 3 Champions League titles

The former Real, Juventus and Bordeaux midfielder made Champions League history when he led his side to a third consecutive title just five days ago.

President Florentino Perez now has the unenviable task of identifying and hiring a new coach to carry the team forward, yet it's emerged that the club's president was taken completely by surprise on Thursday morning when Zidane informed him of his decision to leave.

Zidane has won three Champions League trophies since taking over from Rafael Benitez in January 2016 as well as a league title in 2016/17.

In two and a half years as a manager, Zidane has won three European Cups, the La Liga title and two Club World Cups.

" I'm not going to coach another team right now. All I want to do is remind him that this club is his home and family". For me and for everybody, I think the moment to change has arrived.

"I think it's the moment, both for me, the team and the club (to step down)".

'He gave me the opportunity to come as a player and now manager and I am eternally grateful.

Whether something behind the scenes has occurred to change Zidane's mind is unclear, perhaps winning a third Champions League seemed a fitting conclusion to him, yet Los Blancos have now been left in an unenviable position. They have always backed me.

"That's why I chose to take this decision".

Zidane has clearly seen the signs and believes it is the right time to walk away, with his head held high, while he revealed he will now take a break from coaching. I have to thank the fans for all their support and love. I tried to convince him but I know how it is. "You saw in the Copa [del Rey] this season and I can't forget our domestic campaign that easily".
