Serena mirrors Black Panther to battle past Pliskova

French Open: Sharapova return sees her overcome wobble

Serena Williams made a winning return to Grand Slam tennis which was as memorable as her body-hugging black catsuit when she reached the Roland Garros second round on Tuesday. Pliskova is ranked No. 70 by the Women's Tennis Association.

She has wore similar items before but given she only gave birth eight months ago, her attire got tongues wagging.

"She will not want to leave early because she loves Paris", Courier, victor in 1991 and 1992, said.

"So it will be a really good, another good show for me".

Williams, a three-time singles champion in Paris, will face Australia's Ashleigh Barty in the second round on Thursday.

A CT scan revealed several small clots had indeed settled in her lungs, and doctors administered blood-thinning medication.

'So no one really knows about it, but now that we have that platform and now that we are talking about it, I am vocal about it.

"Just literally not sure if I was going to make it or not at several different times", Williams said.

Williams called this one her "Wakanda" catsuit, referencing the movie "Black Panther", and it said was her catsuit, version 2.0.

Pliskova, ranked 70th in the world, said she expected Williams would not play as well as she did - the Czech player out-aced Williams - but the 23-time grand slam victor proved to be a tough opponent as usual.

Dressed in a skintight, all-in-one black bodysuit, broken up by a vivid scarlet belt, Williams captivated the French crowd from the start of the contest to its 7-6 (4), 6-4 conclusion.

The 36-year-old closed out victory after a number of deuces on her serve at 5-4 with the Philippe-Chatrier crowd delighted to see her comeback win.

In an Instagram following the match, Williams dedicated her first time back on the court to all the moms out there. She was scheduled to play in Madrid and Rome prior to Roland Garros, but withdrew from both because she didn't feel ready to compete at the level she wanted to.

She said the outfit also had some functionality.

VideoThe tennis career of Bernard Tomic has taken another freaky chapter, with the Aussie losing out to a player who drove more than ten hours to make the match. I feel like a lot of people don't talk about it.

Despite exercising before her return, Williams weighed 93.1 kg (205 lb).

Victoria Azarenka, who is working with the WTA as it looks into the issue, says that the news media is making a bigger deal out of it than it should, though.

"But I love that I said that [in a 2004 interview], because I can understand. I think people need to talk about it more because it's nearly like the fourth trimester, it's part of the pregnancy", she says.

The tennis champion is back in the game (literally) and is not alone!

The pair have played just once previously - also at a Grand Slam.

"That's hard. And just coming back from the physical impact of having a baby, at my age is never easy".

"I think she played better than I expected, so it was a tough match".

"Two years has been a long time but I trained really hard on the clay".
