More than 75 women have accused Weinstein of wrongdoing around the globe.

Weinstein - who has consistently denied any allegations of non-consensual sex - arrived at just before 7.30am NY time clutching two books, Something Wonderful: Rodgers And Hammerstein's Broadway Revolution, by Todd S Purdum, and Richard Schickel's biography of producer, director and writer Elia Kazan.

Weinstein arrived at a NY police precinct holding Richard Schickel's biography of the late stage and film director Elia Kazan and Todd Purdum's "Something Wonderful: Rodgers and Hammerstein's Broadway Revolution".

They mark the first criminal charges against the twice-married, shamed former titan faces criminal charges, despite being hit by a slew of civil lawsuits and reportedly being under federal investigation.

Harvey Weinstein has been arraigned on rape, criminal sex act and other sex charges stemming from encounters with two women.

A judge agreed to release Weinstein on $1 million bail, with constant electronic monitoring and a ban on travelling beyond NY and CT.

Asia Argento, who like McGowan was among the first to share her story with journalists last fall said in a statement to CNN: "After decades of abusing women with impunity, finally, the beginning of the end of Harvey Weinstein's reign of terror".

The charges, which relate to two women in 2004 and 2013, are the first to be brought against the 66-year-old following allegations by dozens of women which gave rise to the #MeToo movement last year.

Weinstein has consistently denied any allegations of nonconsensual sex.

"It has given ... any victim the power to stand up and say 'No,"' she said.

Brafman said in a May court filing that federal prosecutors in NY had opened a separate criminal investigation into the allegations. Another aspiring actress, Mimi Haleyi, said Weinstein forcibly performed oral sex on her in his NY apartment in 2006.

Weinstein allegedly hired private investigators from the firm Black Cube to track accusers and journalists in order to keep allegations against him quiet.

That fund, administered by the National Women's Law Center, is already connecting low-wage women with attorneys who can help them pursue complaints of sexual assault and harassment.

The officials were not authorized to speak to The Associated Press and spoke on condition of anonymity.

She didn't report the incident to police at the time, telling The New Yorker's Ronan Farrow that she blamed herself for not fighting back.

Other actresses who have publicly accused Weinstein of sexual misconduct include Rose McGowan, Uma Thurman and Salma Hayek.

"That was the culture then", said Weinstein.
