Donald Trump’s pardons (past and future) have one thing in common

PARDON ME Conservative filmmaker and author Dinesh D'Souza speaks during the final day of the 2014 Republican Leadership Conference

President Trump announced Thursday that he would offer a full pardon to conservative pundit Dinesh D'Souza, who pleaded guilty in 2014 to violating federal campaign finance laws but later said he was targeted for his conservative views.

D'Souza pleaded guilty in 2014 to making an illegal campaign contribution to NY politician Wendy Long's 2012 Senate campaign, allegedly going over the contribution limit by directing other donors to give to her and repaying them. He was initially sentenced to five-years probation, including eight months of living in a half-way home and a hefty $30,000 fine. Then-Manhattan U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara, who prosecuted the case, emphatically denied any political motivation.

Trump tweeted that D'Souza "was treated very unfairly by our government!" But prosecutors say he used his powers as governor to shake people down for campaign contributions, including a children's hospital.

President Donald Trump said he is considering commuting the sentence of ex-Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich and pardoning Martha Stewart. Legal observers also have suggested that the pardons could amount to a signal from the president to associates implicated in the Russian Federation probe that he would consider pardoning them.

Patrick Fitzgerald, who is now a member of Comey's legal team, served as a U.S. attorney when Blagojevich was arrested in 2008 and said at the time that the then-governor had engaged in "what we can only describe as a political corruption crime spree".

Trump also pardoned Jack Johnson, boxing's first black heavyweight champion, whose case had been brought to his attention by actor Sylvester Stallone. "However, I believe this is opening a door, and if he doesn't follow through with [more] people who are not well-known, I think that will be extremely disappointing".

White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said that Trump felt that D'Souza was "a victim of selective prosecution for violations of campaign finance laws".

"The FBI did it to signal to the Obama Justice Department and its stooges that I was a political enemy they might want to prosecute".

"He's being fearless and courageous", he said, referring to the D'Souza pardon.

D'Souza was prosecuted by Preet Bharara, a former U.S. Attorney in NY who became a bitter Trump opponent after the president fired him, along with dozens of other federal prosecutors, upon taking office. But D'Souza told the conservative Daily Caller that Republican Sen.

"Worst news since their parents told them to get summer jobs", D'Souza tweeted.

Mr. D'Souza is the author of almost 20 books and producer of four movies, with the latest one being "Hillary's America: The Secret History of the Democratic Party". Trump pardoned Kristian Mark Saucier, who was convicted of unauthorized retention of defense information after using his cellphone to take unauthorized photos aboard the nuclear submarine USS Alexandria. Rod Blagojevich. Eighteen years in jail for being stupid and saying things that every other politician, you know that many other politicians say.

"The President has the right to pardon but the facts are these", Bharara said. "And it does not exist in the world of Donald Trump", she said.
