United States officials meet with North Koreans despite uncertainty surrounding Trump-Kim summit

Kim Jong-un commits to North Korea denuclearization as U.S. delegation arrives

US President Donald Trump has confirmed that a team of American officials arrived in North Korea to organise the planned summit between him and Kim Jong-un, after he officially cancelled the meeting last week and then appeared to retract that move.

Trump tweeted early Tuesday: "We have put a great team together for our talks with North Korea".

On Sunday, US negotiators, headed by Washington's ambassador to the Philippines Sung Kim, began meeting North Korean counterparts in the truce village of Panmunjom in the demilitarised zone (DMZ) that divides the two Koreas.

The US and South Korea blacklisted Kim Yong Chol for supporting the North's nuclear and missile programmes in 2010 and 2016, respectively.

"Solid response to my letter, thank you!" tweeted Trump.

Tuesday witnessed North Korea's former spy chief Kim Yong-chol at Beijing worldwide airport heading to the United States for talks.

A State Department spokeswoman confirmed that delegations from the USA and North Korea were still in talks to possibly go ahead with the June 12 meeting, which had been canceled by Trump on Thursday citing "open hostility" from Kim. He would be the highest-level North Korean official to travel to the United States since 2000, when late National Defense Commission First Vice Chairman Jo Myong Rok visited Washington, South Korea's Unification Ministry said.

Trump initially scrapped the June 12 summit after repeated threats by North Korea to pull out over what it saw as confrontational remarks by USA officials demanding unilateral disarmament.

Kim Yong-chol, North Korea's former spy chief, would become the highest ranked official from the isolated nation to visit the U.S. since 2000, when Pyongyang sent Vice Marshal Jo Myong-rok to meet then-President Bill Clinton.

The preparations for US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un summit seems to be progressing well.

The general was also one of the welcoming party for US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's recent visit to Pyongyang, and his planned trip to Washington is thought to be a reciprocal gesture.

North Korea has faced years of isolation and economic sanctions over its nuclear and missile programs since it conducted its first nuclear test in 2006.

"Since the president's May 24 letter to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, the North Koreans have been engaging", she said.

United States officials have talked about a comprehensive one-shot deal in which North Korea eliminates its nukes first and receives rewards later.

North Korea's participation in February's Winter Olympics was part of a broader warming of relations between the rogue state and South Korea, which also helped make room for the planned talks between the USA and North Korea. Kim was seen in the Beijing airport Tuesday by Associated Press Television.

The White House said Trump and Abe spoke Monday. The countries were expected to hold another set of working-level meetings in Singapore to discuss protocol, security and other logistical issues for the summit.

After the North's combative statements, there was debate inside the Trump administration about whether it marked a real turn to belligerence or a feint to see how far Kim could push the U.S.in the leadup to the talks.

He now serves as head of the United Front Department, the arm of the ruling Workers' Party that handles relations with South Korea. It remains unclear whom Kim Yong-chol would meet in the United States if he goes.

North Korea's mission to the United Nations in NY is its sole diplomatic presence in the United States.

He is widely believed to have masterminded the attack on a South Korean naval corvette, the Cheonan, in 2010, leading to the deaths of 46 sailors.

"If the report that Kim Yong Chol is on his way to Washington is true, we now know that the main discussion of the agenda and any possible deal will take place there, not in Panmunjom". That impromptu session was aimed at salvaging the summit that Trump had said he was scuppering just two days earlier.
