At least 25 dead in Guatemala volcano eruption

Volcano erupts in Guatemala killing at least 7

Flows of lava have reportedly struck at least one village, causing deaths and injuries.

More than 20 people have been injured.

The volcano spewed black smoke and ash into the sky, prompting the evacuation of some 100 people and forcing the capital's La Aurora global airport to shut down its only runway. "There are injured, burned and dead people", Sergio Cabanas, the general secretary of Guatemala's CONRED national disaster management agency, said on radio.

An eruption of volcano, Volcan de Fuego, has killed at least six people in Guatemala.

Firefighters said late Sunday that they had seen some people who were trapped in the area, but roads leading there were cut by pyroclastic flows and they had been unable to reach them.

The capital's La Aurora airport has been closed.

One video published by news outlet Telediario purportedly taken in the El Rodeo village showed three bodies strewn atop a lava flow, as rescuers arrived to attend to an elderly man caked from head to toe in ash and mud.

Dense ash blasted out by the volcano - which rises to 12,346 feet - also shut down Guatemala City's worldwide airport, civil aviation said.

President Jimmy Morales said he had convened his ministers and was considering declaring a state of emergency in the departments of Chimaltenango, Escuintla and Sacatepequez.

"We have shut it down as a precautionary measure for the planes because the volcanic ash is harmful to the turbines", the airport spokesman, Francis Argueta said.

It was the 3,763-meter (12,346-feet) volcano's second eruption this year. Streets and houses were covered in the colonial town of Antigua.

Workers and guests were evacuated from the La Reunion golf club. "This is an terrible place to be, if you are ever around an erupting volcano like this and you see a cloud moving along the ground towards you, RUN".

Eddy Sanchez, director of the country's seismology and volcanology institute, said the flows reached temperatures of about 700 C.

Guatemala's disaster agency said 3,100 people had evacuated nearby communities, and ash fall from the eruption was affecting an area with about 1.7 million of country's 15 million or so people.

Residents have been urged to wear masks due to the falling ash.
