Teens are ditching Facebook, study confirms

Facebook edged out of top 3 social networks by U.S. teens

Facebook has been dethroned and is no longer the social media platform of choice for users between the ages of 13-17, according to a new Pew Research Center survey.

A new report from Pew Research Center found only 51 percent of USA teens now use Facebook. According to previous studies, only 52% of Teens used Instagram, and 41% of Snapchat.

The data comes from a Pew Research Center survey in which United States teens revealed which services they use and which one they use most often.

Teens from lower-income households are more likely to use Facebook as their go-to social media platform, as well.

In 2018, three online platforms other than Facebook - YouTube, Instagram and Snapchat - are used by sizable majorities of this age group. The world's largest social network has finally been eclipsed in popularity by YouTube, Snapchat and Facebook-owned Instagram.

When it comes to the platform teens access most frequently throughout the day, Snapchat is king.

Less popular network's list includes Twitter, Tumblr, and Reddit which reported earnings of 32-percent, 9-percent, and 7-percent of responses respectively when users were asked which service they prefers. Hispanic teens also reported higher levels of internet usage, with 54% saying they use the internet on a near-constant basis. In 2015 that number was 71 percent, and Facebook was the dominant social media platform.

That might explain why 45% of teens said they're online "almost constantly", a stat that has nearly doubled since the 2015 survey. Only 24% said it has mostly a negative impact, while 31% said it's mostly positive.

The changing tastes of younger social media users are consistent with teen behavior in general. Pew didn't speculate on a reason for the drop, though historically, teens often shun services once they become mainstream - and used by their parents.

Ease of connectivity and interaction with others are the chief positives when teens describe in their own words what they gain from social media.

Usage of the internet has gone up overall among teenagers, with 45 percent reporting that they use it almost constantly, compared to just 24 percent three years ago.
