'Pack Your Bags': Italy's New Interior Minister Talks Tough on Migrants

Italy government: Giuseppe Conte again asked to be PM

The Government was formed after three months of political deadlock following inconclusive March 4 elections, with the pre-election rivals striking a last-minute deal on Thursday to avert a fresh vote in high summer amid growing market turmoil.

The UK is, Prime Minister May said, leaving the European Union but it is not leaving Europe, and having good relations with the European Union and member states was of great importance.

Conte selected economics professor Giovanni Tria for the role of finance minister after he resigned on Monday when Mattarella refused to approve Conte's original nomination of Paolo Savona.

The government will be formally handed over later on Friday and a confidence vote will take place later on this week.

Their shared agenda includes taking a far tougher line on migrants, including a plan to open new detention centres across Italy.

After weeks of political drama that had at one stage seemed certain to lead to new elections, President Sergio Mattarella named academic Giuseppe Conte as prime minister for the second time in less than a fortnight and approved the political novice's revised cabinet. Seriousness", he said. "We will help them, as we always did.

The two pillars of Italy's first populist government have been campaigning in Sicily, days after taking office.

Despite decrying Italy's long history of installing unelected technocrats, the parties suggested Conte as prime minister.

Matteo Salvini and Luigi Di Maio, the leaders of the right-wing League and euroskeptic 5-Star Movement, respectively, appeared at political rallies in several Sicilian cities a week before municipal elections are held on the island region.

Many of the League's voters associate migrants with crime.

Italian bonds gained on Thursday after the news of the Five Star-League deal, with the 10-year yield falling about 18 basis points to 2.7% before rising again to 2.8%.

Salvini, who is also joint deputy prime minister and interior minister in the populist coalition government sworn in on Friday, has ridden a wave of public discontent in recent years, playing on anti-immigrant sentiment as hundreds of thousands of migrants landed in Italy. Nigel Farage, a British force behind the successful Brexit movement, advised Italy's populists to "stay strong or the bully boys will be after you".

But the alliance between the M5S and the League will only have a relatively narrow majority in the Italian Senate, easing some concerns among investors and officials in Brussels that the new government could take drastic actions.

Salvini has branded as "racist" advice from European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker for Italians to work harder and be less corrupt instead of blaming their woes on the EU.

"As minister I will work with European partners and African countries", he said.
