Ariya averts disaster to win U.S. Women's Open in playoff

Sarah Jane Smith of Australia looks over the 16th green during the second round of the 2018 U.S. Women's Open at Shoal Creek

And, after Kim's par putt missed the target, a relieved Jutanugarn tapped in to secure her second major, and her first since her three-shot win at the Women's British Open two years ago.

"After that, I kind of played a little bit scared", she said. She needed to feel deeply in her heart and in her head what she wanted out of this game. "I didn't hit my tee shots very well, but it was a fun day".

"She rolls the ball beautifully". Suddenly her formidable lead was down to just two. I said 'May, talk to me.

She posted a 12-under 204 total, while Smith (74) was alone in second on 8-under and South Korean Kim Hyo-joo (68) another two shots back in third place. She took the lead after Smith stumbled with back-to-back bogeys and then surged ahead with three consecutive birdies on the back nine. But as she sailed her 3-wood in to the water on her way to a triple bogey on the first hole of the back nine, it all started to change.

Smith started the tournament with back-to-back 67s, but didn't make a birdie in the third round.

"Honestly, I didn't really worry too much about it because I just focused on how I was going to play", Kim said through a translator. We send videos and that, but there's something about in person that he seems to get a pretty good gist of what's going on even on the golf course.

Like half the field, Jutanugarn must still finish her round after she was lying at six under following eight holes. She was able to rest a few hours before getting back on the course and birdied two of the first three holes to immediately put pressure on Smith, who has never won on the LPGA Tour. Cameras caught Jutanugarn applauding the shot.

"I think I'm going to sleep well tonight".

Smith, 33, is hoping for a breakthrough victory despite lacklustre results so far in a season in which her best finish was a tie for 26th at the Kia Classic. A bogey at the par-five 17th and the lead was again one. Talley had gained a shot and was one-under for her round through six and at 1-over for the championship in a tie for 28th.

Jutanugarn captured her ninth career LPGA win, her second of the year after the Kingsmill Championship.

Not only does Ariya become the first Thai to win a US Women's Open title but she is the first champion from a country other than South Korea or the United States since Sweden's Annika Sorenstam in 2006.

"If you have a seven-shot lead and then go into a play-off, you have no expectation".

Meanwhile, 18-year-old Paphangkorn "Patty" Tavatanakit won the Best Low Amateur category, which meant Thais won both the professional and amateur categories of the 2018 Women's US Open.

Two-time victor Inbee Park has an outside chance at getting back in contention.
