Summit With North Korea "One-Time Chance" For Peace, Says Donald Trump

President Donald Trump said on Thursday that he doesn't need to prepare that much for the upcoming summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, and in doing so he may be engaging in one of his favorite pastimes - trolling experts and academics.

"We appreciate working together with North Korea".

Trump has said he believes Kim would agree to denuclearization - and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Thursday he had received Kim's personal assurances to that effect - but the two countries have offered differing visions of what that would entail.

It's a technicality, but yes. "We are looking for peace in the world, we are not looking to play games", he added.

While Trump's allies have called his unpredictability a negotiating strength that keeps his opponents off balance, some White House aides have expressed concern that the president will not heed talking points in his briefing materials.

Even now you can get a sense of the tension that has simmered since 1953 by visiting the dividing line within the Demilitarized Zone, near where the armistice was signed.

Trump seems to want to. Instead, Trump acknowledged, the summit is unlikely to achieve a major breakthrough, stating that at minimum he would like to "start a dialogue" with Kim. But its genesis goes back more than a year, as Trump turned the screws on North Korea by threatening war and North Korea responded with a series of missile tests. And there is a possibility of something like that.

Mr Kulesza said he was excited about Tuesday's summit and the potential it has to improve the lives of North Koreans.

"Under eight years of the former President [Barack] Obama - his weak and feckless leadership - Kim Jong Un's actions became progressively more aggressive and more hostile", he said Friday.

In short, there might not be enough leaders in Singapore.

Trump and Kim can also silence skeptics in Washington, Seoul and Tokyo, Yun wrote, by producing "a clear timeline for the ultimate goal: the disablement and dismantlement of all North Korean nuclear and ICBM facilities, material and devices".

After a flurry of contacts between the two Koreas, South Korean officials suggested to Trump in March that Kim would be willing to meet face-to-face.

For the first time, a sitting U.S. President will meet the North Korean Chairman.

"It's a fairly big process".

"They (searched) my bags and then told me that this is a very sensitive time to be in Singapore and that I should stay away from the Sentosa Island as well as the Shangri-La hotel in town", he said in a Facebook post. In 2005, North Korea was testing long-range missiles while promising to do its utmost to denuclearise the Korean peninsula.

"I'd like to accomplish more than that", Trump said.

He has not shied from using flattery either - he was the first to say Mr Trump could be nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize.

North Korea's catastrophic human rights record is inextricably linked with the threat of its nuclear weapons, and addressing those abuses can not be avoided.

Some also question whether the status quo is that bad.

Yet many close observers doubt the once hostile leader's appetite for peace. The Lowy Institute's global security director Euan Graham says Mr Kim has relied on the classic North Korean playbook, swinging predictably from provocation to engagement.

The stakes are high, with American authorities warning that North Korea could soon have the ability to strike anywhere in the continental U.S. Isolated North Korea has long craved worldwide recognition and the prestige of being seen as a nuclear state. "It was fun to see them", he said.
