China may become ‘guarantor and mediator’ after Trump-Kim talks

Trump arrives at Paya Lebar Air Base for a summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un Sunday

The top U.S. and North Korean negotiators held a last-ditch meeting in Singapore on Monday to try to narrow the gap between the two sides on what denuclearisation by North Korea should look like.

Lee told reporters on Sunday that half the amount had gone toward enhancing security for the meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. The North Korean leadership, including Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Choe Son Hui has also taunted Washington, calling Vice President Mike Pence a "political dummy".

Special Operations Command (SOC) police officers patrol Orchard Road ahead of the Trump-Kim summit in Singapore, June 10, 2018.

Kim's chief of staff was spotted in Beijing last week after wrapping up talks with USA officials in Singapore which had included security discussions.

"The entire world is watching the historic summit between (North Korea) and the United States of America, and thanks to your honest efforts. we were able to complete the preparations for the historic summit", Kim told Lee through an interpreter.

United States and North Korean officials are set to meet Monday morning in Singapore to make final preparations for Tuesday's meeting.

Shortly after his arrival, Mr Kim met Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong at the presidential palace.

At the hotel lobby, grim-faced North Korean security guards warned other hotel guests not to take pictures as Kim walked to his Mercedes Benz limousine.

Trump and Kim will start their historic summit with a one-on-one session with translators.

When he previously appeared at the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics in South Korea with the same Donald Trump lookalike, he was escorted out by security after waving and dancing in front of North Korea's cheerleaders.

While en route to Singapore later Saturday, Trump said he looked forward to meeting Kim on what he anticipated would be an exciting day. U.S. officials were quoted as saying that the two leaders could spend the first two hours alone with translators but not advisors.

The two countries were on the brink of war past year, with their leaders trading insults and threats, until Kim made a dramatic offer in March to meet Trump and discuss nuclear disarmament, which the American president quickly accepted.

He met Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong to thank him for hosting the summit, adding: "If the summit becomes a success, the Singaporean efforts will go down in history".

Mr Kim's Air China flight from Pyongyang touched down at the VIP terminal of Changi Airport on Sunday at about 2.40pm, while Mr Trump's Air Force One landed at Paya Lebar Airbase close to 8pm.

Officials remain uncertain what will come out of Tuesday's unprecedented summit, the first of its kind between a sitting USA president and the leader of North Korea.

It initially was meant to rid the North of its weapons, to forge the "complete denuclearization" of the country.

At the same time, Trump said there was a "good chance" the meeting would not work out and claimed he would know nearly immediately after the start of talks how the situation would progress.

"I love my friend Lindsey Graham, but I think first we have to give a chance at peace, and that's why we outlined very clearly what a successful agreement would be", Menendez said.
