Kim Jong-un, Trump arrive in Singapore ahead of landmark summit

The unraveling of the Canada summit meeting increases the North Korean leader's incentive to "up his asks and limit his compromises and for Trump to do the opposite", Richard Haass, the president of the Council on Foreign Relations, said on Twitter, adding, "Hardly the ideal context".

Last year, the North made one of the biggest breakthroughs in its missile and nuclear weapons programs - which it says it needs to defend against the risk of a US invasion - when it announced that it had "completed" its state nuclear program after testing a missile capable of striking most, if not all, of the continental U.S.

"I am very confident that the relationships between our countries. will continue to move forward on a strong basis", Pompeo told a news briefing ahead of an unprecedented summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Singapore.

The US President is reportedly spending a bit more time with PM Lee today - two hours of talks and a working lunch together with government officials from respective countries, according to Channel NewsAsia.

Pompeo has maintained that complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization is the "only outcome" acceptable to the US and that the Trump administration hopes ultimately to reach an agreement with the North Koreans that it can submit to Congress "so that when administrations do change, as they inevitably do, and this one will ... that Chairman Kim will have comfort that American policy will continue down the same path".

Meanwhile Trump told Singapore's Prime Minister that he is preparing for a "very interesting meeting" with Kim and feels it is "going to work out very nicely". "Create peace and great prosperity for his land".

Back in North Korea, the running bodyguards always accompany any state vehicle Kim is travelling on and the same was evident during the inter-Korean summit. Trump has offered few details of what a framework for that process would look like.

When Trump and Kim meet at 9am local time on Tuesday at Sentosa, a resort island off Singapore's port, they will be making history. But any request for the United States to withdraw its 28,000 troops from South Korean bases would likely be rejected.

A third summit could then take place in Washington in September.

North Korea often keeps its people in the dark about important events until the last minute.

Preliminary meetings have already begun.

Trump arrived a few hours after Kim on Air Force One, directly from a tumultuous G7 summit in Quebec, which ended in a bitter personal exchange between the U.S. president and the host, the Canadian prime minister, Justin Trudeau.

Instead of "rocket man", Trump has been calling Kim a "very honorable" man.

Past nuclear deals have crumbled over North Korea's reluctance to open its doors to outsiders.

After meeting Pyongyang's envoy, Mr. Trump acknowledged explicitly that there would have to be many such rounds to achieve the desired outcome. But if successful, the summit could lead to a peace that's been elusive for a half century.

Still, some Singaporeans are getting into the swing of things.

In contrast, Trump reached the White House via a career in property development and reality television, followed by an unprecedentedly populist presidential campaign that upended the United States political establishment.

"How awesome it would be if we are reunited like Germany!"

For his part, Trump accused the summit host, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, of lying, and threatened to end trade with G-7 nations that he said use unfair practices.
