Apple Outlaws Cryptocurrency Mining Apps

Would Like To Access Your Contacts

During its recent Worldwide Developer Conference, Apple quietly slipped some language into the App Store review guidelines that prevent anyone from using iPhones and iPads to mine cryptocurrency.

In addition, Apple has expanded its prohibition on unnecessarily expending resources, draining the battery or generating heat with a specific callout to cryptocurrency mining.

Cryptocurrency-related apps "may not offer currency for completing tasks, such as downloading other apps, encouraging other users to download, posting to social networks", the guidelines stated.

In an update to the Hardware Compatibility section of its developer guidelines, Apple said "apps, including any third party advertisements displayed with them, may not run unrelated background processes, such as cryptocurrency mining".

Even though there's no official record of when the update in the developer's guidelines took place, Apple made it pretty clear that it is directly targeting the prevention of cryptocurrency mining. All you'd need in this case is a device for communications. It should be noted that the upcoming smartphones such as HTC Exodus and the Sirin Finney that support Blockchain will also not be able to have power to handle cryptocurrency mining. Over time, the gadget could generate a Bitcoin, but the power and time consume would make such an endeavour a questionable investment.

The update also attempts to halt rising concerns referred to as phone cryptojacking.

For those interested in cryptocurrencies, don't expect to do any mining via apps installed on the iPhone.

The move allows US iPhone users to share their health record data with third-party apps from autumn.

"Apps facilitating Initial Coin Offerings ("ICOs"), cryptocurrency futures trading, and other crypto-securities or quasi-securities trading must come from established banks, securities firms, futures commission merchants ("FCM"), or other approved financial institutions and must comply with all applicable law", read the unchanged policy first unveiled in December.
