Net Neutrality Rules Have Officially Been Repealed by the FCC

A new state law requires Internet service providers (ISPs), like Comcast and CenturyLink, to treat the delivery of all data equally no matter which company originates it.

The rules oblige Internet service providers, or ISPs, to enable access of all content and applications, regardless of the source, and without favoring or blocking particular products or websites.

Today marks the first day of a post-net neutrality world, one in which rules introduced during the Obama administration under previous FCC chairman Tom Wheeler are officially repealed.

It allows the government to make sure Internet service providers (like Verizon or AT&T) can't block certain content or slow down websites that they do not have contracts with. We had Chairman Ajit Pai on to talk about what will change, how he measures success and what happens if his vision for an open internet doesn't work. This argument is so absurd that it hardly merits refutation. Such a scenario could be particularly devastating for startups with ambitions of becoming the next Netflix or Hulu, as they will have a much harder time paying ISP fees to compete early on.

Since it is now legal for companies to speed up and slow down their services as they wish, customers could be forced to choose between an overall slower service or higher costs. Net neutrality explained: "imagine internet is pizza." Some states are creating their own net neutrality rules, but are barred by the FCC from implementing them. When the FCC opened the measure for public comment, 98.5 percent of individual respondents were hostile.

"The gutting of net neutrality is a symbol of our broken democracy", said Evan Greer, deputy director of Fight For the Future, in a statement Monday. As with everything else in America, popular opinion in the end counts for nothing. Tech giants like Google, Facebook and Amazon also participated.

Democratic lawmakers who are opposed to the repeal took to social media, promising to reinstate the regulations. Here's what we can expect from tomorrow's internet. Twenty-three attorneys general, along with various technology associations, consumer watchdogs and companies including Mozilla, are now suing to reinstate the former rules.

Meanwhile, legal battles against the FCC rollback of net neutrality are still underway.

There's also no mention in Pai's op-ed about how the two largest ISPs in the nation - Comcast and Spectrum (Charter, Time Warner Cable) - score incredibly low in both customer service and value from Consumer Reports.

While Congress recently voted to overturn the FCC's plan in the Senate, governors in New York, New Jersey, Montana, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Hawaii, have signed executive orders protecting net neutrality in their own states.

Net neutrality was repealed a year ago under an order called the "Restoring Internet Freedom" order. It is part of a shift in the class policy of the ruling elite. However, the internet has been relatively quiet in comparison as the changes went live today.

More broadly, the ruling is an expression of the growing monopolization of the American economy by a small number of massive corporations.
