USA drone strike kills senior Pakistan Taliban chief in Afghanistan, says report

Afghanistan marks first Eid amid cease-fire in years

"I confirm that Mullah Fazlullah, leader of the Pakistani Taliban, has been killed in a joint air operation with the United States in the border area of Marawara district of Kunar province", Mohammad Radmanish, spokesperson for the Afghanistan defence ministry, told the media.

The US military said Thursday it carried out a strike targeting a senior terrorist leader in Afghanistan's eastern Kunar province, where Pakistani Taliban chief Maulana Fazlullah is believed to be hiding.

A US military official, speaking on condition of anonymity, say the target of the strike is believed to have been Mullah Fazlullah, the chief of the Pakistani Taliban group that has waged a decade-long insurgency in the South Asian nation.

Reuters and the Associated Press (AP) quoted Mohammad Radmanish, a spokesman for the Afghan Defense Ministry, as also saying that Fazlullah had been killed.

The strike comes amid a seven-day ceasefire between the Afghan Taliban and government security forces to allow Afghan citizens to observe the last days of Ramazan and Eid peacefully.

"Mullah Fazlullah's death is huge news", tweeted Omar Waraich, deputy South Asia director for Amnesty International.

"It [Fazlullah's killing] gives relief to scores of Pakistani families who fell victim to [the] TTP terror [campaign] including the APS massacre", the ISPR said in the statement. If his killing is confirmed by the U.S., it could possibly ease the strained ties between America and Pakistan.

The Taliban chief who ordered the assassination of Malala Yousafzai has been killed in a drone strike, it was announced today.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, echoing Ghani's remarks, said peace talks would have to include a discussion on the role of "international actors and forces".

Afghan officials and militant figures on Friday were investigating reports that the leader of the Pakistani Taliban may have been killed in a USA airstrike inside Afghanistan, but his fate remained unclear.

Fazlullah, regarded in Pakistan as a particularly ruthless militant, was widely reviled for ordering a bloody attack on a Pakistani army school in December 2014 in the northwestern city of Peshawar.

"We have been hearing since early Friday that our Emir (leader) was martyred along with four other militant commanders in Marawar area of Kunar". Washington, for its part, accuses Islamabad of providing safe havens to the powerful Haqqani network, a group involved in numerous brazen attacks on foreign forces in the war-ravaged country in recent years.
