2 feared dead, 41 hurt after quake hits Japan

Water flows out from cracks in a road damaged by the earthquake

An elderly man and a young girl were killed, with several other people also in "cardiopulmonary arrest", after walls collapsed in a magnitude-6.1 natural disaster that hit Osaka in western Japan on Monday, public broadcaster NHK said.

Japanese disaster authorities say two people have been found without vital signs and 41 others injured by an quake in western Japan.

The large quake, with a magnitude of 6.1, struck north of Osaka city just before 8am local time on Monday (11pm GMT Sunday). The Japanese meteorological agency originally put the quake's magnitude at 5.9 but later raised it to 6.1. Scattered fires broke out in buildings in the heavily urbanised area, and while authorities reported no damage to railways or major roads, parts of the network had been closed as a precaution.

Several rail services were suspended, including the bullet train.

This is a developing story. An 84-year-old man living in Ibaraki was killed by a falling bookshelf. The Meteorological Agency warned, however, that aftershocks could be felt over the next two to three days.

Meanwhile, passengers were stranded on a train for about 90 minutes after it came to a halt between Osaka and Shin-Osaka stations.

The magnitude 6.1 quake struck the city of Osaka and the surrounding area Monday about 8 a.m.

A 30-year-old lawyer Jun Kawasaki said the quake reminded him of the Kobe quake 23 years ago, and started packing up immediately to run away.

"There are fears that the risk of house collapses and landslides has increased in the areas shaken strongly", said Toshiyuki Matsumori, in charge of monitoring quakes at the agency.

The area north of Osaka was the hardest hit, the agency said. Daihatsu Motor Co, a unit of Toyota Motor Corp, stopped its factories in Osaka and Kyoto while it checked for damage. Roofs and roof tiles at homes and at least one temple fell to the ground in Osaka.

The magnitude 6.1 natural disaster near the major city of Osaka killed three people, toppled concrete walls and store shelves and temporarily knocked out some power and water supplies.

The latest disaster has reminded many in Japan of the magnitude 7.3 Hanshin-Kobe quake that killed more than 6,000 people in the same region in 1995.

Japan sits on the so-called Ring of Fire, one of the most active seismic zones in the world, and experiences earthquakes frequently, which is why most infrastructure is specially created to withstand earthquakes.
