SUV fleeing border control crashes in Texas, killing 5

Video shows Border Patrol vehicle striking down a Native American man and driving away

At least five people were killed and several others hurt Sunday as an SUV carrying more than a dozen people during a suspected "smuggling event" crashed while fleeing from Border Patrol agents in South Texas, authorities said. Of those five included the driver, who is reportedly a United States citizen.

It was unclear why law enforcement began chasing the vehicle, though KABB quoted Dimmit County Sheriff Marion Boyd saying it was the result of "good police work".

The chase started when a border control agent spotted three vehicles traveling together and became suspicious of smuggling.

Four of those passengers were pronounced dead at the scene and another at the hospital.

Video of the scene by the local television station KSAT-12 showed the large, black vehicle was severely damaged, blocking both lanes of the rural stretch of highway. The driver was not ejected in the crash, and was sitting upright in his seat when a deputy took him into custody. Officials have not yet released information about the immigrants' countries of origin.

Boyd said his officers have dealt with the driver before, adding he was scouting the area earlier to try and pick up immigrants. A fifth person later died at the hospital. More information coming soon.

US Customs and Border Protection Public Affairs Specialist Yolanda Choates directed questions to the Dimmit County Sheriff's Office. The vehicle was traveling around 100 miles per hour, according to Boyd. In 2015, an SUV packed with immigrants crashed during a pursuit, killing six passengers.

He added: 'This is a flawless example of why our borders need to be secure'.
