Kim Jong-Un Sends Happy Birthday Flowers to Xi Jinping

All the explosive cartoons before and after Trump's bromance, er, summit with Kim Jong Un

Kim is seeking relief from economic sanctions in return for his pledge to denuclearise and is believed to be seeking support from China for that, the Nikkei said in a dispatch from Beijing.

In an unusual move, Chinese state media announced Kim's visit and said he would stay for two days.

However, reports say Kim could also be seeking China's help in gaining relief from USA sanctions.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un (L) with US President Donald Trump (R) at the end of the US-DPRK summit at the Capella Hotel on Sentosa island on June 12, 2018 in Singapore.

A top South Korean diplomat pushed back Monday against critics of the summit between President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, asserting the "top down approach" by the two is "unprecedented", and those asking "where's the beef" should realize the joint statement in Singapore is just "the bone on which flesh should be added". In exchange for that pledge, the United States has cancelled military exercises with South Korea, something Beijing had previously floated and known as the "freeze for freeze" initiative.

Mr Trump earlier presented a standard for the first-stage goal of the denuclearisation process, although South Korea's foreign minister would not clearly agree on the point.

"Our government hopes China will play a constructive role in resolving this problem", ministry spokesman Noh Kyu-deok told a regular briefing.

Kim's third trip to China since March comes as Beijing tries to strengthen its role as a mediator between the USA and its neighbour, where it claims compelling security and economic interests.

Kim is visiting China and there is a reason for this, he said.

While China is said to have reaffirmed to US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo that the measures will remain in place until denuclearization is achieved, a number of news reports have since claimed that sanctions may be being eased.

Recent reports, too, hint that Beijing is increasingly loosening its enforcement of United Nations sanctions along the Sino-DPRK border - claims even alluded to by President Trump at a press conference following his meeting with Kim last week. The two leaders will also likely talk about North Korea sanctions and denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula.

Kim has labeled the exercises practice for an invasion of North Korea.

China has shown a willingness to be involved in U.S.

Amid fears the summit would weaken the global coalition against the North's nuclear programme, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo stressed after the meeting that sanctions would remain in place until North Korea's complete denuclearisation.

China may not have been at the table in Singapore but it retains strong influence behind the scenes, Wang said.

Sunday's edition of the ruling party organ the Rodong Sinmun, most recently, featured a front-page report that Kim Jong Un had letter and flower bouquet to the Chinese leader on the occasion of his birthday.

South Korea and the USA have also agreed to suspend a joint military exercise planned for August, in a move the Pentagon said was in line with the pledges made by Trump and Kim.

The Pentagon confirmed Monday that major USA military exercises this summer in South Korea would be suspended, following President Trump's decision.
