After giving birth, New Zealand leader craves mac-n-cheese

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and partner Clarke Gayford

Neve Te Aroha Ardern Gayford made her way down the Auckland Hospital corridor in her mother Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern's arms, flanked by her exhausted but proud-looking father, Clarke Gayford.

Ardern has not yet made a public appearance since giving birth or announced a name for the girl.

Emerging from Auckland Hospital with their sleeping baby Sunday morning local time (Saturday evening ET), Ardern and Gayford told waiting media they had named her Neve Te Aroha Ardern Gayford.

Ardern is the first world leader in almost 30 years to have a child while in office.

She was born at Auckland City Hospital, on Thursday, just down the corridor from where Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern was making history as the second woman to give birth while in the position of leading a country.

Gayford said the birth was "all a bit of a blur. for both of us".

Ardern has yet to announce a name for her daughter, after earlier saying the couple was having difficulty deciding.

"Neve" (pronounced like leave) means radiant, light or snow and "Te Aroha" (TAY AH-row-ha) means love and is also the name of the mountain and town near where Ardern lived as a child.

Ardern's partner Clarke Gayford spent Thursday night with Ardern at the hospital. She previously said that she was able to do everything because she had "enormous support around me and it makes me quite privileged", refusing the impression that women had to be super human to do all. Pakistan's Benazir Bhutto gave birth while she was prime minister in 1990.

"We chose Neve because we just liked it, and when we met her she just looked like she suited the name", she said.

He plans to become the primary caregiver for the child when Ardern returns to work following a leave of six weeks. "So, I'm dying to see it and hold her and just see what's she's like".

"Hopefully these things that in these moments now are.a novelty.one day they aren't new any more", Ardern said.

"I'll be Prime Minister AND a mum, and Clarke will be "first man of fishing" and stay at home dad".

"So I hope for little girls and boys that actually there's a future where they can make choices about how they raise their family and what kind of career they have that are based on what they want and what makes them happy", she said. During her absence, Deputy Prime Minster Winston Peters will cover the day-to-day government operations.
