Apple and Samsung settle seven-year patent battle

Man and woman shake hands- business deal

San Francisco, Apple and Samsung have made a decision to end their epic patent infringement battle that began in 2011 and went all the way to the US Supreme Court. The two companies spent the next six years battling in court over the damages amount.

Samsung naturally defended its position vigorously, and would soon file a number of countersuits against Apple for patent infringement.

There was even a case heard by the Supreme Court in 2016.

It reads: "Plaintiff Apple Inc. and Defendants Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., Samsung Electronics America, Inc., and Samsung Telecommunications America, LLC would like to inform the Court that they have agreed to drop and settle their remaining claims and counterclaims in this matter". Terms of the settlement were not given.

The ruling, of course, didn't spell the end for Apple and Samsung's legal squabbles.

The case dates back to 2011, when Apple, under the direction Steve Jobs, vowed to launch the legal equivalent of "thermonuclear war" against Samsung and other Android phone vendors Apple was convinced were ripping off designs it had patented for the iPhone. Since the case first came about, we've seen the judge rule in Apple's favor back in 2012, and an endless series of appeals since then. "It is important that we continue to protect the hard work and innovation of so many people at Apple", the iPhone maker said in a statement.

When reached for comment, an Apple spokesperson referred us back to the May court decision that found Samsung liable for $539 in damages. It was ordered to pay the U.S. tech giant more than $1 billion for infringing on three of Apple's design patents related to mobile devices - the quick links to phone numbers, the slide-to-unlock feature and the auto-correct function.

Samsung appealed part of that award, taking its case all the way to the Supreme Court, arguing that damages should be limited since patent infringement involved only certain features.
