Travel ruling could boost other immigration suits

The Supreme Court has upheld the President's controversial policy

Liberal groups bemoaned Kennedy's decision, as the Sacramento native appointed by Ronald Reagan has been a key swing vote in a number of court cases that bolstered progressive goals.

McConnell already said in May that a potential Supreme Court battle would move to the front of the judicial confirmation pipeline.

That will give President Donald Trump the chance to cement conservative control of the high court. "I'd like to have it announced right away so we can get to work on it", Grassley said. Since Kennedy became the reliably median justice, the ideological range between the middle five justices has been wider than it was at any other time in modern Supreme Court history.

"Justice Kennedy's dedication to the law led him to a career of distinguished service to his country".

The travel ban has been fully in place since December, when the justices put the brakes on lower court rulings that had ruled the policy out of bounds and blocked part of it from being enforced.

"This is the most important Supreme Court vacancy for this country in at least a generation", said Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) "Nothing less than the fate of our health-care system, reproductive rights for women and countless other protections for middle-class Americans are at stake".

McConnell changed the Senate rules a year ago to ensure confirmation of a Supreme Court nominee with a simple majority, disposing of the filibuster.

The travel ban was among the court's biggest cases this term and the latest in a string of 5-4 decisions in which the conservative side of the court, bolstered by the addition of Gorsuch past year, prevailed.

For years, he has infuriated conservatives with decisions striking down prayer at public school graduations and upholding abortion rights - and exasperated liberals with decisions on affirmative action and campaign finance laws.

In a statement later issued by the White House, Mr Trump labelled the ruling "a tremendous victory for the American People and the Constitution" that upheld presidential authority on national security issues.

"That will begin immediately", he told reporters in the Oval Office on Wednesday afternoon, shortly after a half-hour meeting with Justice Kennedy, 81.

Justice Roberts said it was "wholly inapt to liken that morally repugnant order to a facial neutral policy denying certain foreign nationals the privilege of admission". Kennedy has mainly supported abortion rights in his time on the court, and Trump has made clear he would try to choose justices who want to overturn the landmark abortion rights case of Roe v. Wade.

As Syrians face violence in their native country and a ban on entering the USA, the executive director of the Syrian American Council told the Associated Press many people were scared.

"Remember this, so we have a pick to come up, we have to pick a great one", Trump said.

Trump said the ruling vindicated his decision.

"Wow!" the President tweeted today, minutes after the court's decision.
